Looking for a prestigious credit card

I am at the point in my life where I would like a prestigious credit card. I know there is the AMX platinum. Any other good ones out there?

Anyone know what the qualifications are for some of these?

Kidding! What do you consider prestigious? I've had the most comments made on CSP personally, but it's like "is it hard carrying such a heavy card around?" Comments I could live without and in no way reflect on it's prestige.

I have about 20 years of credit - no baddies - and about to pay off everything so my utilization will be zero.

Prestigious to someone who only has a cursory knowledge of cards? Easy, Amex gold. And it's not even a particularly hard to get card score or income-wise.

Now if you want a card that's going to impress someone who has hard to get cards themselves or has a wider experience with credit cards, that's asking a different question. Most cards on this list require knowledge to truly appreciate.

Let's say for instance I saw an Amex Platinum in the wild. I would recognize that has basically the same underwriting as an Amex green but with a higher annual fee and no hard income requirements. Kids with part time jobs can get one if they have the right scores. Whatevs.

I've heard the Marriott Rewards is impressive looking tho. Metal. Black. Nuff said. And it's a bargain at only $89 a year!

Personally tho, I think the Ritz Carlton card is one hell of a sexy card. It presents a very understated statement that, "yeah, I'm accruing rewards cause I'm frugal, when I stay at my regular 5 star hotel."

Don't pay everything down to zero.

Pay all your cards down to 0 except for one. Let the statement cut with like $10 and then pay it off.

Your score will drop pretty significantly for no balances reporting.

So true. Over the years, I have worked in jobs where I have seen really great and exclusive credit cards (OMG - and it is not as dirty as that sounds), and it was more impressive before I got all into credit and now know card requirements. That said, OP, please never be one of those people that acts like a jerk because of what they have in their wallet. Seen this many times. Best of luck to you in the end. If you find a pretty card, you can impress most people.

Also keep in mind that in the minds of most people AMERICAN EXPRESS means prestige. While Ritz Carlton might not be so for the average person.

What's even worse is when I have to take payments over the phone and they say "I would like to pay with my American Express Platinum", I just tell them I only need the card number not the type and they become standoff-ish.

Agreed. Paying a high AF for "prestige" seems a bit ludicrous if you do not use it to it's full potential.

They denied me because i "needed to show more usage on the other cards". That doesn't even make any sense. Needless to say, i was pretty bummed out about not getting the 8% APR

Totally agree re: the AmEx Platinum. I might be able to get one right now, but what would be the point? The annual fee would break my back and I would never be able to enjoy the benefits. Similarly, I wouldn't be able to hit the $30k annual spend on the PRG, so what would be the point?

Incidentally, I was reading on this topic last week and came across that Ritz Carlton card. That thing is damn sexy. I've been lucky enough to stay at the Ritz twice (LA and Central Park . . . friends in high places), and if staying there regularly was something I could personally afford, I would be all about this card

Amex Plat has taken away some of the valuable perks, that IMHO, it's not worth it unless you can get a targeted 100k sign up bonus. The perks, it still has - Priority Pass, FHR can be found other ways. Lounge Club thru other less expensive AF cards (but just about equally useless as PP domestically), FHR benefits - you can get thru Virtuoso or Four Seasons Preferred Partner, etc. I will most likely be cancelling my Plat when AF is due.

Ritz card is a much better deal with all the perks, especially now that airline incidental bonus is $300 (and not tied to particular airline like the Plat) bringing the AF to basically $95.

If you stay at Marriott brand hotels, the card is worth it. Complimentary Gold status your first year, 5X points, etc. Thru DH's work stays at mostly Marriott's, been able to amass over 300K reward points in less than a year of having the card.

If a heavy metal card is what you're after, this is one of the heaviest and best.

OP, what type of prestige do you think you can get from a credit card? Not really sure what you're after, so asking. IME, these cards get comments mostly for weight or the unusual nature but I wouldn't say it gives any better service or whatever you may associate with prestige, especially since most of the time they are in your wallet. But I do enjoy the benefits of these cards!

if the OP wants a prestigious card, at any cost because the "prestige" is worth it and is paying for that showmanship, then get thhe Amex Platinum for Amex, and the Visa Black card (staineless steel) for non Amex; the metal one will probably get you more attention due to its weight. Good luck.
