Done with Discover

I had a Discover secured card for 15 months. Paid on time and usually in full. At month 14 I called about having it unsecured. Was told accounts were reviewed monthly and to wait as I wanted to close it. Waited over a month called and given same information, I closed it (still waiting for refund, had 0.00 balance). I cold apped late last night, got a message to call for verification and I called this evening. The rep said that I needed a co-applicant or co-signer, not verification in my book. I have cards with AMEX, Chase, Barclays, Capital One, Bank of America, FNBO, and Syncrony all unsecured and no co anything. I'm done with Discover, no more apps for them. If they send a legit pre approved offer, I'd really have to think about it. Guess I'm not good enough. My FICO's are 679 through 690 one baddie, oh well no place I go is Discover only and with AMEX, VISA, and MasterCard I'm covered. Just needed to vent, thanks.

Vent away Xraygirl, vent away I for one understand your frustration with Discover. I ve tried 4- 5 times to get in with them, through their very own invitations only to be disregarded like friday afternoons trash . They are definitely a strange beast Even with a payment history with them, they still want you to have a joint app or co, thats just plain ridiculous. I know its frustrating on how bipolar they can be but like you said, you have other accounts so its their loss , give your business elsewhere. Ive done the same. While itd be nice to have a Discover, i will manage just fine without them. Thanks for sharing your story, it helps some of us Discover disgards feel we are not alone haha. On to bigger and better things , best of luck on your journey

Discover is a wonderful card to have when you can get in. I feel you though. I have tried several times also and no go for me. My husband has one so he made me an AU. One day maybe I will get in.

Share your pain! Unreal ... Discover defies logic n figuring how they approve some and turn down others. It took me three apps over several years before I got approved. They would not give me a Secured Discover Card.

Be patient it's something in your file they don't like at this time.13 months is not long.Took me 5 years to get in with them and once in they've shown me nothing but Love.Remember they Are strange but less forgiving of Bk's,past Lat payments etc.,.I say wait it out keep the secured card and use every once in Awhile until that door fully opens.

They seem to be a little hard for some people to get in for some reason, including myself. Took me 4 apps in about a year, and some with lower, some with higher fico scores. Finally last month i got approved for $1200 with lower scores than before and higher uti. I would give it about 3/4 months and try again. Good Luck!

Discover does take it's time with things. It's a good card to have but you can survive without it.

Thanks all, I guess what got me was the pop up said I needed to call for verification, no questions were asked he just checked the app and said they wanted a co-applicant or co-signer. That's not verification. That and waiting over a year with the secured card and no offer. This was my last secured card, so I wanted it to graduate. I know Discover can be "strange", but it's their loss of business from me. Had a secured card and have a checking account with them. Secured card closed and the checking account soon will be. Like I said, if I get a real pre approved offer I may consider it, but it will have to be very sweet.

Sorry to hear about the denial, OP. What is it in your credit profile that you think is holding you back, or that Discover isn't liking when considering your application?

Is your income sufficient? A lot of times when a co-signer is required it's income related. If that's not it all I can think of is it's whatever the negative stuff is in your file that's keeping your scores out of the 700's? Have they ever provided you with reasons why you are getting denied?

Income is upper 80's, one baddie that drops off next year. I am waiting on the denial letter so I'll know for sure. All other accounts are paid. Two cards with high utilization the rest are 0. Overall utilization is under 30%. Probably to many new accounts. I can accept that, but don't tell me to call for verification only to tell me you want co- signer/applicant.

OP, I’m so sorry about your frustration with Discover. I, for one, never should have been approved by them over someone with your profile. I originally had a card with them several years ago, CL was $9K. I ended up going seriously late on most of my cards, back in 2012/early 2013 due to job loss. Discover was one I ended up going 120 days late with. They put me in a hardship program (this was one creditor who wouldn’t agree to be a part of my Consumer Credit Counseling plan), and I paid them off 3 years ahead of schedule (they put me in a 5 yr hardship program). Yes, the early payoff was a good thing, BUT, the fact remains that I still had a mess of lates in my wake. I applied for another card with them a few days after paying them off and approved for $1400 CL to start. Income in the 80’s, all cards current for the last 2 years, no charge-offs or collections or anything else negative. Lots of new accounts (though oldest account is 23 yrs old) and inquiries. I was feeling a little bit crazy for even trying to get back in w/them after that. Still shocked over the approval, and yet they deny you??? I do NOT get it. I wish I had some insight into their behavior.

The same thing happened to me. I got approved for a Barclay rewards and Quicksilver upgrade. My score is in the 660 range and I foolishly thought that this would be a great time to try to get a Discover card. I was wrong. They said they would only approve me with a co-signer. I don't get it.

It's strange why they didn't approve you. When I applied, back in 2014 - my score was around 650-660 with a 4 years old BK on file. Approved for 3k and now my limit with them is $20500

Discover is goofy and I won't waste my time with them again. They hard pulled a 758 no bads, 12 yr history and AAoA of 39 months. $248k income and gave me an instant denial. The letter said not enough history using credit.

Wow Vortexeng, they are seriously bonkers. I have to say how frustrating it was when i would apply, after applying, you would have to call in to finish up( this iin itself is kind of misleading or maybe gets ones hope up ) and after telling them you just applied, they just say " We are sorry we cannot approve at this time would you like a joint app...etc" no offers for secured route or anything. No thanks, 1 , i dont have anyone to joint app with and 2, if i cant get the card on my own merit, i dont want it with someone else.

Anyhoo, i know my profile plays a big part in their decision and i understand but theirs is a cat and mouse game one can only play so long. Also if income truely decides if you get approved, im in BIG trouble

My guess is they saw the cards you have , and thought you won't use their card enough.

Discover can be real picky like that.
