Discover really tempting me!

I've been planning to app for the discover it miles card for a while. Plan to app after Feb. I have 3 cc's that will hit a yr at that point and one left that hits a year in april. I know April isn't that much longer then Feb, but I really want this card now. They have sent me soooo many prequals in the mail for the IT. I've been getting them for a few months. Just got another yesterday. White envelopes, green, pink, copper... when I don't respond, it seems they send me a new color thinking maybe I won't resist the next pretty color. Lol. I keep saying I'll wait and then I get another offer. Lol. I have yet to see a mailer for the miles card. Do they ever send that out?

Wow, yeah Discover is a weird temptress. Maybe once you get all colors youll know its time. By chance what ranges are you getting?. In all my mailers, 6, all have been for It!. Id imagine if you want Miles youll have to cold app though i could be wrong.

Lol. I think blue may be the only color I'm missing. They do have ranges. 16-19%. Somewhere in there. Not specific, but smaller range than what's actually available for it. Too bad they won't allow a real way to prequalify online. Sounds like miles will definitely be cold app.

Any negatives on your credit reports? What are your scores like? If they're 660+, I'd probably apply now.

I have friends who, with only 1 credit card on their report, waited for their 6th statement to cut, then applied for Discover it and were approved.

I think I'd be approved, but I've added a lot of new accounts this year, so trying to lay low and not cause a problem with my current lenders. Apped and approved for 5 credit cards this year, closed one, and added a new car loan. Waiting for things simmer down some. Don't want any AA!

Yeah that could be a key with Discover. Give it a couple more months as you establish a little time with your new accounts. The weird thing with them is when you think youd be approved is when you find out you arnt and when you think no way, hello new card.

I think the vast majority of mine were purple envelopes but the last one i received had nothing on outside to indicate it was a Disco mailer. Strange times indeed

AJC, that's true. I hear the miles card can be tougher to obtain than the IT too. So who knows if I'll get it. Part of my having to wait when I don't want to wait strategy. Lol. Maybe my chances will increase by then.

I don't think they send out the Miles invites because when you pre-qual with them they're pushing the IT card as the main option. For those not familiar with the Miles/ NHL/ or whatever else they offer they don't show it as they're older types of options. If you're seeing a small subset of APR then you're on track for an approval. Waiting it out until you're ready though might get you a single APR instead of a range which would pretty much be guaranteed to be approved.

Yeah, I had a thread on it somewhere. My new apartment allows credit card payments for rent, but a visa payment is like $62. All I have are visas. Def not worth the cash back. Mastercard or discover is about $3.33 for the transaction. Still gives me high cashback value on my highest monthly expense. I don't really want a citi dc card. The other mastercards seem to have af's or not as good a return as the citi dc. Then there is the miles card. No fee. 3% back the first year and 1.5% after that. Still higher return than a normal 1% card. The IT is just another 1% card after the first year. My main spend is non-category spend. I have my chase freedom card for the categories and it's paired with the unlimited, and eventually, the csp.

I remember your other thread because of the rent $62 vs $2 fee comparison. I miss renting at this point with all the sign up bonuses that would be easy to obtain through the rent portals. I don't know how everything else looks but you could always pay cash / debit. Say you're paying $800/mo that's $16/mo you'd make from Discover under the double cashback promo. If you had a higher yielding checking account somewhere paying 2.5-4% then you'd be ahead by just using your debit card or pushing a check from bill pay. I make about $50/mo on interest in my checking with 15 debit trans per month.

I am NOT paying that $62 fee right now. I pay thru my checking and it's free. I'm just trying to make some extra money using a cashback card. Lol. The discover will be over $30 a month for the first year, plus whatever else I throw on there for the 3%.

Check out www.depositaccounts.com and under checking look through the rewards checking section. Might as well make some money on your normal spending / balance. Teaming this up in the future with a good spend card and keeping your cash on hand is a good move.

Interesting. Is this just going off your checking balance, or paying for using your checking account? Cause I have a CU that pays for using checking/debit, but I never use it cause credit rewards much higher. I only pay car, credit statement, and for right now rent out of a checking acct. My main checking acct doesn't usually have much. I put enough just to cover my expenses and the cu accts get the rest. What is this going off of?

I just read one and you have to use debit a certain amt of times. I don't touch debit anymore. Not going to have debit fraud again. I canceled my debit card and locked my boa down. Can only use if I unlock. Not risking my money again. I stay with credit and get my cash back that way.

I've had a few fraud notifications through my CU and they just squash them. They actually changed things up and replaced the card the last time with a chip based debit card. It's a fact though that no matter what you do to protect yourself from shielding the card from RFID scanners, chip/pin, etc. if it's been issued then some scammer has the info already. I tend to use the card for routine things where I can rack up the transactions fairly easy like groceries through self checkout... .scan whatever $ amount needed to get credit for the transaction then swipe and ring up some more and then swipe and so on. It's pretty easy to hit the transaction limit and limiting your exposure to hit the goal. I found since I stopped using it when eating out all of the time the alerts stopped and haven't heard anything from the bigger CC companies about any fraud or seen anything pending that would indicate the same. I do paypal for anything online since they send a virtual # to the site instead of inputting it directly.

I had money taken from my acct. Had to do police report, sign papers, and wait forever to get it back. Fraud can always happen, but if it's credit, it ain't my money. It's the bank's money. I have 3 cashback credit cards that I use for different things. I've made a lot on those this year. I can't deal with another checking/savings right now. I just canceled my paypal the other day. Too unsafe for me. We sound like total opposites. Lol

Still bitter about family member who didnt try for a 10.24% apr offer (no thats not a typo.. ten point twenty four) he got in the mail from discover for the it.... included the 0% for 12 months and the double cashback for first year.... He has high scores...

My interest rate was definitely not that low. But the 0% for 12 months and the double cash back made this a wonderful card for me. I'm at the end of my first year with a cash back balance of $711 which will be doubled with next month's statement. It was a great ride.
