Amex Gold Delta Skymiles denial

Hello, first and foremost thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this and give suggestions.

- On December 17th 2016 I applied for a Gold Delta Skymiles credit card. I instantly got the 7-10 days message. I waited until December 29th to give them a call to see whats going on, and they stated they were in the last days of processing my application to give it 3-5 more days. So, I called them today (January 10th 2017) and was informed my application was declined. I was shocked truthfully because of my credit profile. Currently I have scores in the range of 730 from all the credit beaures. No new credit cards open in the last two years, did have a few inquiries on my report due to a car loan in the amount of 27k. My annual income is 65k, and I do have a few credit cards. One Chase Freedom in the amount of 7k, Amazon store card 4.1k and a Capitol One card with a limit of 3k. I have no missed payments or anything negative on my credit report and I never use more than 15% of my TOTAL credit limit. I asked for a reconsideration and within a couple of hours it came back declined, again. They stated the reason was "Lack of credit history" Though, I've opened all three of my credit cards I believe in 2013 or 2014. I was just curious if anyone has any other reasons why I would be declined and suggestions on how to build my credit so I have a good opportuinity of approval next time. Thank you very much.

I'm sorry your Delta Gold application was declined. If you can share what other accounts you currently have (and their ages and CLs) that will help others here to better help you.

In any case, with your scores I can see an Amex card in your future for sure... you just need to figure out what to tweak to make your profile meet their requirements.

Based on the info you provided this is very surprising. Are the scores you mentioned real FICO scores or from one of the free sites like Crecit Karma? There can sometimes be a huge variance between the real FICO and what we call FAKO.

The other qustion would be, have you taken a look at your credit reports for yourself? You should take a look from time to time to make sure everything is as you expect, in terms of open accounts and other things.

Otherwise, possible reason I can think of are mistaken identity (is it possible you punched in incorrect information on your application), or have you burned Amex in the past? Amex has a tremendously long memory if you've had problems with them before, but their reason for denial shouldn't be lack of history in those cases. Last thing you can do is wait for the actual letter in the mail (I think Amex let's you access it online actually) and see what they actually say in the letter, what your score was at time of pull, etc.

Indeed. These are my real fico scores. I purchased them off of Experian, and I have never been associated with American Express before. Before even submitting my application, I did do a review of my report and everything checked perfectly fine. What confuses me the most is my little brother got approved for the Delta Skymiles and a Green Card with a score below a 700 and he has many inquiries but no missed payments or anything. I'm not really sure why I was declined, I'm positive I typed everything in correct and I was debating on calling back and asking for ANOTHER reconsideration but I doubt they will change their minds. Kinda curious if they recently changed the requirments for approval.

This is interesting. I got approved for the very same card with only 6 months of credit history, back when I got it last year. Everything about your profile screams approval.

If you bought your score off of Experian you don't have your real FICO score, You may want to check it and see if they actually pulled against your account. When I pull my report on the Experian website it only showing three accounts but myfico show my entire history. I have been meaning to call them and find out what is going on.

I will definitely check into that, but even when I click the reason why it was declined on the Application Stauts site it shows my Experian is reporting at a 724. So, I just wish I knew what they did not like about my credit profile because I do not believe that "Lack of Credit History" was the reason for denial.

(Edit)- Just something to add. I did apply for the Green Charge Card and was instantly approved, so I guess its a start with American Express. I called and asked my "internal Limit" and they stated it is $1750 which is good I suppose. I'm satisfied.

Keep after 'em! My first Am Ex card was the BCE with a $3k sl, then I app'd for the Plat. I'd give it six months, and app again - you'll get there!

Indeed. I'm hoping that if I use the charge card for six or so months that, I'll be able to "establish a relationship." With them and that will improve my odds to apply again. Never know though, always have heard American Express is weird when it comes to approving and denying people.

My recommendation is to wait for the letter. It will explain and hopefully make sense. If the letter doesn't make sense, call them to discuss.

Yeah, I viewed the denial letter online and it was just lack of credit history. I called them and asked for another reconsideration and it still resulted in a no. Although, the manager I spoke to told me that since I have not opened a card in a couple of years, that's how the lack of established credit comes into play. So, I'm not entirely sure how people view not having a lot of credit cards is bad, but that's why I was declined. Personally, I have good credit and I have the cards I need. I don't understand why I would open cards if I do not need them. Anyways, it's over and done with. I'm happy with Green Card, it's a start.

Your score and data points you listed sound fine. I was approved for the Delta with no issues but honestly, I think the reason for the decline is that they had just approved you for one of their products. You stated you applied for the green card and were approved immediately then went for the Delta and were declined if I read that correctly.( Unless you meant you apped at a different time.) They should have just told you that instead of the other silly excuses,especially since they'd just approved you. Try again for the Delta in a few months. Congrats on the green card
