Last year I applied for the AMEX Blue Travel Rewards card and was declined with a 720 FICO. About 2 months ago I was thinking I really wanted to get my foot in the door with AMEX and applied for the Green Charge card and was instantly approved. After seeing a lot of posts in these message boards about how people with FICOs of 660s, 670s and 680s getting instantly approved for AMEX BCE and EveryDay I got confident and wanted to try myself. I even saw someone post that they are at 48% utilization and was still instantly approved. My FICO is a 698 right now and my utilization is at 42%. I have a very thick credit portfolio with no baddies. Between 8 cards that I have $29,600. I've paid off 1 brand new car in the past 7 years, and have $7k left to pay on a car that I got a loan for $16k for. I have a good annual salary, savings, retirement and stocks. Yesterday I was declined for the AMEX BCE.

What does it take to get to get approved for an AMEX credit card?

How much are you using the Green card? It is a way to show them your payment history. More than two months is probably needed, and a fairly consistent usage, I would think.

The utilization may be on the high side, with a 700ish FICO. On the high side regardless, actually.

I didn't see your utilization there but I think that may be a huge factor in your case as to why you haven't been approved. Maybe get that much lower and you might have a better shot at another Amex card as well as more positive history on your Green might make a difference. My overall utilization has been consistently under 10% and I've had no problems getting other Amex cards.

AmEx EO is a lot better. their EO Reps are all in Florida, USA and helped me recon after 2 frontline CSRs put a recon through and failed. a little history: I have 4 months of credit history and got an AmEx green 2 months ago, and was approved for my Gold Delta Skymiles and BCE cards back to back last week. only the delta required recon. if you call EO, you'll be in good shape I bet. Just be ready to explain any questions they may have

I've never burned AMEX. The Green charge card is my first AMEX card. When calling AMEX today the reasons for denying me was my utilization, number of recent inquiries and they said "number of delinquent accounts". I'm 32 years old...almost 33, and I have not been delinquent on ANYTHING since my early credit years when I was 20, 21. I have to check my full credit report to see what they are talking about delinquent...

I would not just assume that it's your util. pull a copy of your CR and see what they are talking about. Something may have popped on there without you knowing.
