I never understood the worry about double and triple pulls. In the eyes of the creditor it's a single pull. If one is trying to be slick and go for cards that only pull one it can be beneficial trying to spread them out. But most double pull anyway and with a thick file inquiries aren't that big of a deal, except when buying a house then you don't want any inquiries period, at least for last 12 months.

We would need to know more about your profile to give you some advice . Have you generated scores yet ? If so what are your true fico scores not Crek karma ones , also do you have any negative marks on any of the three credit bureaus?

If you don't have a secured Discover I recommend that. You will probably be graduated in 7 mo plus it gets rewards, cash back match, FICO score. It's a great card.

My recomendation: don't get cards cuz they are easy to get. Only apply for what you truly want. If your scores aren't good enough for those, wait. You have one secured... get 1 or 2 more, maybe Disco secured and a store card you shop at a lot... and that's it till your scores get to the high 600's.

Just my opinion tho. I hate to see others make the same mistakes I made by getting tons of crap toy cards and regretting it once you get your scores up.

It's a Discover secured card, I just put $200 on it because even with $500 I knew I couldn't really "use" it since I plan to keep it under 30%. I'm just going to spend a few bucks on it every month and pay it in full.

I turned 18 a few weeks ago, and I'm actually still waiting on the card in the mail. I don't plan to apply for anything until I have a score generated. I'm really interested in:

Victoria's Secret card

Capital One card (I bank with them, but they would not even give me a secured card because I had no history)

Possibly a Home Depot/Lowe's card because I'll be purchasing a home in the coming months.

Thanks for the input

Sydney

My two cents as a 19 year old. Capital One is rubbish, so skip them reason being their reward structure is terrible, and they require a 3 bureau credit pull to get approved. Go for the VS card if you shop their often and the rewards would benefit you. Skip the Home depot as they are underwritten by CITI bank which is a PITA for new files, Lowe's on the other hand gives good limits, their underwriting is A LOT easier as they are issued by Synchrony bank and only pull TU. I would dump Cap One as a bank and look at joining a credit union, with your file you would be able to get a $500 unsecured visa no problem. For that research local CUs, find one that would fit your wants from a Financial institution and then walk into the branch with your last two pay stubs, open checking and apply for the credit card. I used to work for bothe NFCU and a local CU in Colorado, at the local CU in Colorado we would auto approve people with thin files for a $500 unsecured card provied they could provide POI (proof of income). Most local CUs are like this, I would also suggest looking into joining NFCU so that in the future when your FICO score has generated you will be able to apply with them, they give out monster CLs. Anyone can join them via San Diego Navy league just search on the forum here and you will find the process.

The world is yours for taking at 18, one step at a time. You may get lucky with Amex as it seems they are opening the doors to more and more people , they may want to be your one. Id wait at least a couple months to make sure you generate a Fico snd perhaps, if you are willing to risk a hp, app for an Amex. Of course there are other routes you can go, Navy Fed would be great to get in at 18! So you could consider them . Best of luck! Take your time and decide well, a thin file in the begining isnt so bad as it can grow and thicken with good management. This is a great place to have found, soak it up and you will be light years ahead of the game

For they are limited to that one store, and you can't use them everywhere. If you want a card that has a great starting limit. I hear that Chase will usually give decent limits and also go for the Credit Unions. They are Super Generous!! Another great pointer is that Go with the bank you want to get your mortgage with If you get a CC with them and open an account just to establish a relationship it'll make it easier to get a home loan and give you bargaining chips in getting a lower interest rate and more!! I love credit unions! They are always a good place to start just do some research! Personally, I wouldn't waste an inquiry on a store card mostly since your credit is so new! Wait till later on down the road!

Im not a fan of store cards myself, but if you are going to get one for VS... wait for the SCT to show up for you. Don't take a pull for a VS card, and be very sure you want a store card. So many make the mistake (including myself) of opening up tons of store cards when new to creidt or rebuilding bcuz they are easier to get. Once you get into Prime card that are Visa/MC/Disco/Amex you will not want the store cards Anymore unless you really shop there all the time. Even then, at least with me... my tastes have changed with my age and I don't shop at the same places I did 3 years ago... so unless it is something like Macy's or Lowes, places you will shop at for a long time.... I would pass. Maybe VS is like that for women... idk. Just my 2cents.

Gl with your journey.

That's if my understanding of mortgages is accurate.

Welcome to the Forum and Kudos for you on thinking about credit at 18. I recommend not apping with Cap One anymore since they hit you with three HP's already. Just research some CU's in your hometown and NFCU(they are nice and have many products for thin files). As long as you don't get cards b/c peers have them then you will do just fine. Having a relationship with a CU will pay off when you are ready to do a mortgage or car loan.
