Hi folks,

First timer here looking for some advice on what my score and util should be before I apply for the MP Explorer Card -

Recently was targeted with the 70k miles offer - so I have been working on my score.

I have seen steady improvement in my FICO (all three) in the last couple of months by reducing my util (started at 94%; down to 83%; now down to 65%). This month's round of payments hasn't hit, but it should boot my score to right around 660 (here's hoping) based on past performance. I know that many people have success with Chase in that range, but I do have 1 late (student loan from Sept. of 2015) and a CO not paid for $892 from Chase (actually was a WaMu MC) from October of 2013. I have a long history (AAoC 10 years 1 mo), and a wallet with Discover (CL $6,700; Bal $4,300), a Capital One (CL $1,750; Bal $1,250), Merrick Bank (CL $1,500; Bal $949), CreditOne (CL $700; Bal 0); and a Macy's Card (CL $400; Bal $87). I have no lates on anything other than the Student Loan from Sept. of 2015 over the past 2 years.

Question is this:

Should I wait til my util drops below 30% or should I wait til September until the student loan late falls off?

Also, thoughts on the Chase baddie from 2013 - I know Chase has a LOOOOONG memory.

I bank with a Credit Union - used to have Chase, but dropped them in 2013. That probably doesn't help my case either - LOL

Thanks for any advice!

Id wait until your score was closer to 700 and your utilization was under 10% especially with that late payment.

Realistically yor chances right now for an approval are slim. You need to get your utilization below 10% and wait for the student loan late payment to drop off. If you are able to accomplish both then your scores will go significantly higher. Even then when you apply you will most likely be denied because of the issue with WAMU/Chase. I was denied on my first applications with them back in 2014 for an account with WAMU opened by my ex wife without my knowledge and defaulted on in 1992 so yes Chase has a very long memory. Your only hope is to get them to overturn the denial on recon but you should pay off that CO before even trying.

However, it certainly will help your CARS and your overall credit reports if someone manually looks at them. Good luck.

Did United target you for the offer or did Chase? I think the answer to that is important for knowing your chances. At 70K bonus miles you can't beat it.... Wonder why all of a sudden they are beating their old deal? What else can they beat? Will they beat you if you don't apply?

I might just try at that rewards level.

The 70K miles is pretty much a standing thing for all United with Elite status, it has been on my screen for about 10 months now ever since I got my elite status. Same thing happened with my friend the day after he got elite, the offer is just always there.

Good luck OP I hope you are approved.

I received the same promo, it expires at the same time. Be patient, I have received several nice offers for that card. There will be more offers coming soon.!
