Weird denial?

Very new here so I'm not sure how all of this works. However, I'm in the process of restoring my credit. I went from 460-480 to 590-630 in a month. I recently applied with CapitalOne and received this denial letter via email.

"Thank you for applying for a credit card issued by Capital One®. Unfortunately, after reviewing your application, we cannot approve your request at this time. Please know that in the process of making this decision, your credit score was not impacted.

The reason(s) for our decision are: • Based on your application information, there is legal action pending against the applicant."

I have no pending legal action, that I'm aware of. Never been garnished. Never been sued.

I also checked the court records and there's nothing there.

Anyone knows why they would've denied me with THAT reason?

Hi, I've never had any credit card other than Bank of America.

I would call the recon line to discuss where they are getting this information. Explain that you're concerned about the reason for denial and the potential for identity theft. Might be that something was entered incorrectly also.

Do you have ny bounced checks floating around somewhere? Or a checking account closed with a overdraft amount still owing?

My experience with lenders - if they made up their mind they will decline an application and they can't find a reason, they will make one up. I had a declination where the reason was "too many inquiries". There was only ONE inquiry in my CRA - THEIRS. A different one somehow managed to come up with two simultaneous contradictory reasons: Too many open lines and too few open lines at the same time.

I don't have any checks or closed checking accounts. I looked at PACER and there's nothing listed. I also searched the local courts, nothing. It's just odd.

I called them and they didn't know what was going on and then they told me to call 800-258-9319. I did, and after entering my social, it went to an answering machine for Nathan & Nathan. I'm calling back in the am because I am SO confused. Also, after Googling the number, it seems as if it's something related to owing CapitalOne and I've NEVER had a card from them.

This sounds about right. I'd rather them say "you credit used to suck but not so much right now but it still needs to suck less". It'll keep me from freaking out thinking I'm being sued!

It almost sounds like Capital One is taking legal action against you. You may be a victim of identity theft.

Their letter said they didn't even pull your CR. I would probably write EO.

Judgements don't show up on your credit report unless and until you lose the case in court. Whatever it is probably hasn't reached court yet, especially since you say nothing is showing on your court website.

Sorry to hear about your Cap One situation.A few months ago, before ai discovered this forum, I found a Cap One on my credit report. Zero balance, but it was there.

I disputed the record, and within a month it got removed. I was using Credit Karma then.

Last guess for me ...... Any unpaid traffic tickets or court fines, property taxes?

Not a bad guess. I was declined for credit in the 90's, I was app'ing in the bank branch so the guy told me it was because a collection from my alma mater, C***ell University. I couldn't imagine what that was for, so I called them - an unpaid traffic ticket for $25! After paying them tens of thousands of $$$ in tuition they put a collection on my CR for a lousy $25 ticket. I mailed them a check for their precious $25, and ever since every alumi letter from them goes straight in the trash.

Well. At least you've confirmed that they've been stingy since the 90s and it wasn't jus tme. They charged me over $50 for ONE missing screw in a chair in my dorm room.

Anyway. I hope it's not identity theft for you and just a case of an incorrect entry.

Did you get it figured out?

I did. It was an identity theft issue. They said I had a credit card back in 2008, I wasn’t even old enough to have one. It was probably on my credit report when I was ignorant to credit and has fallen off.
