I like the fact that you're logical. You realize the fact that youe income at this point isn't "strong" enough to support a SL of let' ssay $5k-$10k. And that is ok, being that you are a college student. I think you're taking the right path in prioritizing your needs vs your wants.
This type of self control will come in handy down the road.
Now, if you feel strongly about getting a Chase and you're all pre-approved, only you can pull the trigger. But just know what you're getting yourself into.

Ignore all vantage scores -- the Chase credit score is a vantage score and is not a credit score used for lending purposes. It is an entertainment score similar to professional wrestling. It may look real but it's fake. Only look at scores that actually say "FICO Score" near them.

FICO Score -- real wrestling with injuries and real trophy belts

Vantage Score -- fake glam wrestling with fake moves and fake injuries and chairs bashing your skull

If you are prequalified with Chase, you're VERY likely approved but if you have no credit cards, it's hard to say!

I suggest going into a branch, sit down with a personal banker and ask them to pull up your in-branch preapproved offers. Those are SUPER solid approvals if you have any.

Report back!

Thank you for your quick response! and thank you also for the valid info regarding the scores. Just would like to say that I do have a credit card. I mentioned it above. It’s a 1.5 years old BofA Cashrewards with clean history and hence why my FICO is at 778.

You have to roll the dice some time. Are you pre qual for the Freedom also?

Thank you for your response Jerry!

Yeah I think I have to roll the dice at this point. Given my income I don’t think I can qualify for the 5K. Approval. Yes I am prequalified for the Freedom card and the Ulimited Freedom as well. I have had offers also from Amex BlueCash and the green Amex Card. I guess the only thing I have going on for me is a good credit history, although short and a 778 FICO.

Which CRA is your FICO score with? If you have the VantageScore from Chase, it's Transunion. But as mentioned above, don't rely on it.

You will have to meet Chase's threshold for the Sapphire. I don't know based on your short (but very positive) credit history, if they'd approve you for the minimum 5K SL. I think if you've prequalified for their other cards, you'll have better odds with an alternate product to "get you in the door."

How low is your income? I think if you earn at least $30,000 a year I think you can get in there. Reddit (links not allowed here) has a mega spreadsheet with a lot of CSP/CSR approval data points and there are a bunch of people, even students, who have gotten CSP with incomes in the $30,000 range and up.

Thank you banquier for your response. I guess my CRA is TransUnion because that’s what it says at the bottom of my page when I check my FICO score through my credit card on the Bank of America website. And yes I was thinking the backup plan could be to obtain a Freedom (heard it’s better than the unlimited).

The 5% and 1.5% don’t need to be redeemed for cash. You can leave them as UR points and if you ever get CSP or CSR they’re worth 25-50% more if redeemed for travel on the Chase site!

I have FU at 1.5% but will get CSR some day and redeem for travel at 2.25% which is awesome for me. I just leave my URs to grow on Chase’s site.
