I agree that a tell-all on how to manipulate CLI's through purchases is probably not in good taste. But, this thread is hardly the first light of day that subject has seen, particularly in regards to this bank, and the SCT.

Furthermore, the practice is hardly fraud. Fraud would mean that the OP obtained something tangible - using someone else's credit. Rather, an unused credit line, in the OP's name, cannot be considered fraudulent, unless and until the OP goes nuclear... and receives items that they never intended to pay for. Which is still not technically fraud, since it was all obtained legally, in the OP's name. However, it would definitely be unethical, and would also be hard to explain away in bankruptcy court.

Regardless, short of all that, calling out pressing a CLI button, based on a server's known preponderance to place excessive weight on purchases, by basically begging consumers to buy things... is just being hysterical.

A soft pull CLI, whether initiated by purchase, or by phone call, proves that the OP was legitimately granted the CLI, as the system took the opportunity to review credit before making that decision.

By the way, actual fraud, in this regard, would be hacking the server html to increase the purchase amount, thereby manually raising one's own credit line.

Sure, the OP might be ruining it for everyone else, if the creditor decides to change that policy of automated CLI's due to purchases. But, unless the creditor actually gets hit with a bunch of fraud, it seems to me like the risk of their automated CLI algorithm being abused, is far outweighed by their desire to turn a profit wilfully encumbering idiots that buy their useless crap online, in the first place.

Thus, all is fair in love and war; and the OP is doing us all a favor... because, I don't know about you, but I was under the impression that Overstock retail cards et al, are not exactly considered prime accounts, by any measure. So, have at it.

If something like this works with Amex... then we'll know we have a problem on our hands.

I am pretty sure TheCreditGame did not mean any harm in their comment, but rather was trying to warn you to be cautious. I do agree though, that while it may not techinically be "fraud" or "churning", it certainly isn't the most honest way to go about getting a credit limit increase. I would suspect that if you continue to do it, they may just close the card down completely. I would imagine that a few large dollar amount cancelled orders in relatively short amount of time may trigger some type of alert on their end.

How long of a history do you have on your various Comenity cards? My experience is that once you hit the six month mark, you get tremendous CLIs, but prior to that they were small and sporadic. I got three cards (VS, OS, and Wayfair) on June 1st, none with a limit over $500 and now they sit at $1500-$4100, simply by using them a few times (no more than 3 times each) and paying them off. I also have a Torrid card that is almost 3 years old with a $3,000 CL. Comenity can be great to you, but you need to be careful how you use it.

Note the word "hint." Comenity is one of the more easily spooked banks, even moreso than Chase or BoA once they catch on to what is going on. Their reliance on automation is the only reason anyone even gets away with some of the stuff they do.

What I find funny is how people went into panic mode when Comenity shut down hundreds of people from various credit websites because they had been sharing and encouraging the SCT for so long, Comenity figured it out, and proceeded to issue the banhammer on most of them. My question for any of them, and possibly for you, is... if Comenity shuts you down citing fraud or some other buzzword you consider "strong" do you take any responsibility for your actions? I mean, easily exploited, Comenity has been, but exploitation is exploitation, and when comeuppance happens, I am hoping you remember these words.

Also, I am not one of the folks that thinks its good form to share this kind of deceptive practice with the community at large, because some newbie is gonna come along now and do this, and possibly take it way too far and even end up in criminal, civil, or bankruptcy court.

Also, I am not being intentionally condescending. I am being a bit judgemental, probably, but your feelings on the matter are immaterial to the subject. I am trying to warn you of the possible consequences of your actions, and hopefully inform others of the nature of this practice.

Barring that, do what you will, its your card and your report.

By the way, going into a retail store and buying a big ticket item, has always been a way to promote the increase of a credit line. This has been common knowledge since the beginning of credit.

It all just starts to get a bit scrambled when creditors start automating processes, thus opening them up to people repeatedly smashing the luv button, and so forth. It's funny how society takes an inequitable, pro corporate stance on this. To wit: Creditors may automate processes until their heart's content, naturally to save them from the human element. But, should the consumer decide to automate their responses, thus using these games to their advantage - games that were not created by consumers - it somehow starts to be considered wrong.

But, credit scores are the prime example of why manual underwriters still have real value. The ability to discern behavior, while taking potential for excessive manipulations into account, is something only a real live person can reconcile. Sure, a computer can be programmed to look for these manipulations; but then, the discovery of that would lead to yet another workaround.

It can be argued that actual reality is so far gone from the scene, that credit is nothing more than a game, at this point. May as well play to win, taking no prisoners along the way.
