If there is nothing on your credit reports, about the ony way you will find out is by applying for one of thier cards. Chase has a very long memory so something even 15-20 years ago can affect your ability to be approved for new credit with them. Hqve you checked thier preapproval site to see if anything shows?

When you apply and if declined it's mentioned on the letter (i.e. past performance). If you had any credit card accounts (including other loan products) with Bank One, First Chicago/NBD, First USA, WaMu then it's likely you're still in their system (even if a tradeline no longer reports on your CRs).

Well you can take out that old dusty ouija board and ask your former spirit or you can just app and see if they spit out that “Declined for Previous relationship” reason!

Of course that is if all your CRAs doesn’t list a derog Chase account history!

Sometimes you don’t. In my case when I first applied for the Chase United Explorer card in 2014 I was denied and the letter stated something about ‘derogatory past relationship with Chase’. I had no clue because I never had had a previous Chase card. Eventually found out that it was a WAMU card from 1993 that my ex wife opened in our names and I never knew about it. 21 years later it came back to haunt me. Took many phone calls on subsequent Chase applications to get them to overlook the WAMU account.

Even after my first approval for the Freedom card I was denied on apps for the CSP and Ritz card until multiple recon calls worked.

Chase has a very long memory. Sometimes a better one than what we do.

Wow Irish nice data points. I have an old CO from Chase and finally got back in last year with a green checkmark FU but I want the CSP and assuming the old CO is one of the reasons I never see offers anymore. Good to know that recon MIGHT help with ancient baddies.

I've had a rocky credit history. I can't change the past. All I can do is move forward, improve, and change the things in my past that I can change. If I did find that I burned Chase at some point, wonder if I paid up would that make a difference to them?

I don't know, I just cant fathom not knowing if I burned someone in the past or not. I think that Irish's example above from something 21 years prior is one of an outlier and that generally speaking people are aware if they have previous negative history with a lender. How far back does your credit history go?

An item to keep in mind, and echoing Irish's example, lenders tend to merge over time or acquire/sell off various product portfolios. So, it's naturally possible for someone who may have limited their credit usage or not use any at all for a while (depending on their circumstances) to recall what institution they may have dealt with at the time. The average consumer does not keep track of bank mergers, let alone be aware if they're still in some sort of blacklist.

Maybe I never burned Chase. Checked the prequal site last night and was preapproved for Freedom, Slate, CSP, and one other! Couldn't believe it. Can't pull the trigger at the moment. Waiting to close on mortgage. But, I will be once we close!!

I have been checking for prequalified offers on a weekly basis now for about the past month. When I checked yesterday, I noticed that I have a prequalification offer for a citi doublecash. Just wonder how reliable this is? Maybe I didn't burn them 22 years ago!?

With a longer credit history. Being a bit older lol, and one was not responsible in ones youth, it sure is possible to forget who one burned. I won’t hate on that. There are a few banks that have memories like elephants.
