Credit Score 619 w/ 1 collections, need credit card approval

Hello all,

I am 25 years old and still figuring credit out.

I made a mistake when i was younger and am now paying for it.

I have a credit score of 619, I have a Capitol One Card of $300 limit b/c I needed an active account to improve my credit. I have one account in Collections and am saving to pay it off in one lump sum. But I need more active accounts to improve my credit score in the mean time.

What is a good account for me to apply for?

Any suggestions actually is welcome

Have you checked any of the pre-qualification sites? (Citi, chase, Amex, discover) Start there. Might have to be a secured card from citi or discover. But still worth it for utilization purposes

I recommend doing pre-qualifications on Chase, Discover and Citi Bank to see if you're likely to get anything without it dinging your credit.

How old is the collections?

Nothing is guaranteed in the credit world just more likely. I would work on getting what is holding your scores down resolved before seeking more credit personally.. I would work on a PFD on that collection you have that can read up on in the rebuilding credit section of this forum as a wealth of information in that sub-forum.

Is that a Fico score? Which credit bureau is it from? What about your scores at the other 2 bureaus?

Like most of the other members suggested you should check pre qual sites. If the system comes back with a solid apr instead of a range (ie. 14.99% - 24.99%) you probably have a solid approval. Please give us some data points. AAoA, Util, Scores (Ex, Tu, Eq), # of inquiries. How much is the collection and lenght of delinquency? You should be able to acess this information through Cap1's CreditWise, and from what I've seen its a pretty detailed overview and gives you TU score. Please update and if you end up with any prequals still consider waiting a few months and getting utilzation between 1-5% and extending postive payment history before going through wiht the app. Good luck

I would think something like a discover secured card would be a great option for you. Of course that requires a lump sum of money that may be better spent paying off that collection. Either way, best of luck rebuilding!

I would recommend a Discover Secured card to begin. But def check for Pre-Qual's with others.
Discover also does eventually graduate.

1. Check pre-qualification sites as noted by others.

If nothing comes back with solid preapprovals, try option two.

2. Add two secured cards. This will get you 3 revolvers reporting. Keep a small balance on one and zero on the other two.

Having the three revolvers reporting positively while working on the collection will be a big help once the collection is resolved.

Last time I used Discover's preapproval tool, which was around a month ago, it was a soft pull.

My first card was Capital one Platinum with 590 ISH SCORE. $300 THEN $500, $800, $1300

Hey!

You’re definitely in the right place for learning about credit. If you stay immersed in the forums you will learn a lot.
I believe before I even had access to my Fico scores I had one collection that I eventually paid off. Sometimes working with the creditors to set up payment plans can ease the tension if kept up with. I made sure mine were lump sum payments though.
I know you weren’t here for that exactly, but what everyone else is telling you is some great advice. When I had the same score or similar score to yours citi actually approved me for a double cash back card, but I’m not sure how that would go with the collection.
Secured card is probably the safest bet.
