There is a benefit to using a secured credit card with no rewards - the benefit is greater fraud protection.

Unfortunately, you nor I are in a position to be choosy with our lenders and rewards right now. We have to take what we can get and slowly rebuild a history of responsible credit usage.

You may feel that your mistakes were made three years ago and that you've since grown and developed better credit habits, however, these lenders from whom you want cards will see your CH7 three months post-discharge and will feel otherwise.

You mentioned several major players in your burn-list which kind of limits your options, although Cap-1 seems to forgive as far as their sub-prime options. Considering how recent your bankruptcy is I would suggest you have 2 options: #1 get a secured card or #2 give it some time.

I see that you had several AU cards as mentioned in a previous thread - have those gone away?

You might want to spend some time in the rebuilding and bankruptcy forums since a lot of MF members have shared their success and not so successful stories (and options).

There is a difference between need and want. If your "need" is to have an MC/V and that need is currently being covered by using an AU account, then you are good to go. If your purpose is to re-establish one or more MC/V accounts in your name then I suggest you age out your bankruptcy a bit to maybe 12 months before you go crazy on the apps.

Bankruptcy is a serious hit to a credit report, it says to creditors that yeah you extended me credit and I've stiffed you so you can't expect them to jump right back in and say welcome we'd like your business when you have shown an irresponsible credit history (please no hate notes on the need for filing, I'm not judging just saying what a lenders perspective is). The cost of charge-offs and bankruptcies are borne by all of those that pay higher APR's due to "acceptable lender losses" - it's not a mindless hole that has no victim. Again, I'm not judging those that have to find a lifeline or fresh start, I'm just saying that you can't expect your Chapter 7 "restart" to equate into instant approvals for new credit lines and cards - it takes time to establish a new and responsible credit history. Note that just because you can't file a new bankruptcy for x number of years, doesn't mean you can't default on newly established credit lines or cards.

27 apps and a new auto loan (application at least) says that you expect or at least hope that your Chapter 7 filing has no effect on your future. Step by step and with time you will recover, but I think you are finding out that it's not immediate. For those that you "burned" most won't be that forgiving, Cap-1 being the known exception.... in time.

It appears that tour bankruptcy discharge is too new for a non-secured card. If you want another secured card, I would suggest the OpenSky card. There is an annual fee $35 I believe but there is no credit check for that card. You could use that as your daily use card. The card does not graduate but after twelve months you should be in a place where Cap One may let you back in or Barclays would let you in. Your Discover should also be on the verge of graduating.
I understand, and i don't take it the wrong way but to put it simply, it was my mistakes in 2014 that led to the bankruptcy. I've had time to learn from my mistakes and the timing of the bankruptcy was strategic, fortunately but also unfortunately, as if i waited a couple months later i would've no longer qualified for ch7 and would have not had an easy recovery as i did. However when i am spending sometimes $4000 per month... the cash back and points do add up...

I also hate using my debit card for fear of my account being drained and fighting with the bank's fraud department to get it back.

OpenSky Secured has no rewards so there is essentially no advantage over using my debit card...

Ah I see. Your original post only mentioned needing a MasterCard/visa. The State Department secured card has reward points. It will require you joining the CU which would be a hard pull for membership.

Most secured cards aren’t for getting cash back and/or rewards. They are to help rebuild credit.

Since your discharge was three months ago, you may be moving too fast with optimizing rewards/cashback.
