US Bank Flexperks Travel Signature Visa - declined after "pre-approval"

I've been in the market for a travel card, and while checking prequals saw this card at a solid single APR. Applied later that evening after considering, and went to manual review. Was told to call back today for decision, ultimately denied. Reason given was too many recent accounts (3 in the last 6 months).

Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone checking US Bank preapprovals, as they don't seem to be a sure thing. Current scores in sig, they did pull TU, which is now my only TU inq.

No pre-approval is a sure thing

Do you have any derogs? Aaoa? Utilization? Based on your cards, you either have a short history or rebuilding. If your history is short, your scores indicate higher utilization

The number of recently opened accounts might have been the straw that broke the camels back, when combined with other factors

Welcome to US Bank and you probably got a UW in a bad mood as many people on the forum have 15-25 new accounts in the past year or two and get a nice limit with US Bank.. Just relax if you really want that card for 6 months and reapply. As another poster stated Pre-Quals even with a set APR aren't guranteed as nothing is guranteed in the credit world even with a 800-850 score declines still happen.

I do have 1 settled collection, that's the only baddie, and scheduled to drop off Dec of 2020. AAoA is 15 months, util currently at 7%. Rebuilding since 2015.

I had a pre-approval with them for the cash+ card. (fix apr and everything). I did app and got the manual review. after a couple of days, I got a denied letter in the mail, denied because they weren't able to verify my identity. I called, the rep was friendly, told me to email them a copy of my DL and SSN. I got an email confirmation from them that they got the documents. (human reply). After a week or so, another letter that they can approve me because one of my details information is being used for suspicious activities or something like that. (maybe from sage report I don't remember much). I didn't bother to call back or trying something else, I wasted an HP and I won't try them anytime soon.
