How to restore Amex 3x CLI

Initially I was approved for $10,000 for AMEX blue cash everyday. After 70 days, I requested for 3X CLI and credit limit increased to $30,000. Six months back, I carried balance but paid minimum balances for couple of months. During that time, AMEX reduces my CL to $6,500.

Is there any way I can request AMEX to restore my credit limit to $30,000? I cleared all my dues and credit score is back to 730.

Oh wow. I've carried and paied only minimum balances with AMEX before and even had a few late payments. Whenever I had a late payment they would just scold me and threaten me with higher APR but they've never decreased my CL... Did your credit have a drastic drop or something any credit usages that could be considered risky? Otherwise idk why they would do that. Could also be an error?

Sorry to hear that. I’ve seen ppl post that Amex will restore balances after whatever number of months Amex decides. I’m not sure if for your specific circumstances.

What was your utilization on Amex, overall? Between being paid & score going back to previous numbers, hopefully they will work with you. I’d definitely ask.

I carried balances on other cards too. So, it affected my score and it cane down to 620. But I had charge card on business where I carried some balance. After three months, I cleared and slowly cleared my personal card too from AMEX. Not sure if they decided because of that balance.

I was careful with AMEX and used only 30% on personal side. The business side card is charge card and paid minimum balances for three months before clearing it up. But my CLI was never restored back.

I only recently got a charge card but I thought these cards were supposed to be paid back in full every month? Maybe that's why they lowered your CL? Hopefully if you show over time you are less of a risk then they will restore your original CL.

My suggestion would be to reach out to Customer Service and see what they can do. Explain your situation. Someone else had this issue and they restored the original CL after the balance was paid. As always, YEMV.

Yes. For charge card, AMEX expects to to pay in full. But when I could not pay, they sent messages to make minimum payment and charged me interest. But they never canclled the charge card and last month, I swiped the Charge card for 30k for four different transactions and paid up. They never stoped any trasaction or flagged or notified me. So, I am guessing once the balance is paid, the account is in good standing now.

But I could not decide if I should ask for 3x CLI again.

If it has been more than 6 months since you asked for any CLI on AMEX revolvers, you can ask again. They may decline the increase, or counter with less. They may ask for income verification.

Your situation is unique, so only AMEX can tell you what will happen next. The approved charges on the charge card are a good sign. Keep in mind that AMEX Revolvers are similar to VISA Signature and World Elite MC, you might be able to charge over the limit, as long as you pay it off by the payment due date of the statement the over-limit shows up on.

Is the charge card not enough for your credit needs? Are you planning on carrying balances again?

@NBR525, thanks the tip. Yes. I will ask the CSR. Charge card mess up was one time thing. Payments were delayed and I did not plan for that. I am careful after that.

After the 61 day request you have to wait 6mos before you can try again. You can always try any time you want, but you'll get an auto-decline. At least it won't be a HP.
