1 year, thin file? Discover or Amex. You might even be able to grab a chase freedom.

Hi,

I have a Capital One Platinum Master Card with a $800 CL. I have had it over a year now. I pay it off every month and don't carry a balance.

Looking to get my 2nd card, but not sure who to try since my scores aren't up to 700 yet. Currently, TU 677, EQ 688.

Any ideas? I want to have decent approval odds so that I don't add more unnecessary inquiries to my report.

Sounds like perfect #'s for a Discover card. You can check the Pre-Qualification page and see what APR / offer it presents. (Thats just 1 option)

I've some thoughts for you:

1) If you can list some of what's important to you (travel rewards, cash back %, categories, high CL, etc) in a CC, members can make better suggestions;

2) I'm guessing those scores you list are not FICO scores? If not, you can get them here for a $1; Fico scores are the scores of choice for most CC lenders and paint a more accurate picture of your creditworthiness;

3) Ask for a CLI on your Cap1 card -- you can do it online & it will be a soft pull; it's been over a year and you're overdue.

Good luck.

You could also call Capital One and see about product changing your Platinum card to their Quicksilver cash back rewards card. Or if you want more than one card, check their prequal page and go for a brand new Quicksilver. Then, you'll also have the option to combine your two cards down the line for an even higher single credit limit.

My advice would be as follows

1) Ask for a Credit Line Increase from Capital One

2) Call Capital One and ask if your Platinum account is eligible for a product change/upgrade to Quick Silver or Venture Card.

3) Go to Discover and Amex pre-approval pages and fill them out and see if you are pre-qualified for any of their cards.

4) If Discover and Amex like you - get one of each and then Garden and chill for a year and let your inquires fall off and your credit age mature.

Just my 2 cents

With a year of history, you are able to go ahead and apply for the chase Freedom or Freedom unlimited as you want to get in Chase cards first due to their 5/24 rule. Even if the limit is on the low side, say 500, you at least have a foot in the door with chase and can apply for the better SUB offers later.

Just going to repeat what the others have said... Both Discover and Amex are good options for you... I had a CU card.. then waited awhile.. and got both the Freedom and Discover... both were preapprovals... Thing with the chase is they one-upped my previous cards limit.. So I might try working on getting a CLI on your Cap One before apping if you want a chase card.. But you can probably app for either or both Discover or Amex... now.. and wait 6 mo to a year and round it out with the chase..

Just some options.. I predict chase will lowball you on the CL and its usually an HP to get it increased.. Might not even get enough for their premium cards.. The thing about the freedom is folks are seeing some unprompted autoluv with Chase Freedoms as of late..

-J
