Discover CLI Denied!

In mid-2016, I was approved for the Discover IT card. Over the years, I've had several CLIs, the most recent on 10/8/18. My current SL is $3,900.

I recently applied for another CLI and was denied. The reason given in Discover's letter was, "Insufficent experience with current Discover card credit limit". It was a SP: TU 709

Does the reason given mean I haven't been using my current SL? (I don't put much spending on this particular card). Or simply that it's been too soon since my most recent CLI?

Please remind me how often Discover is likely to grant a CLI? Thanks!

No thats just a generic not at this time. No one has a clue how their cycles works. Just keep smashing the button every once in awhile and hope the apple falls from the tree

In your case, I think it's safe to assume that it means you just got a CLI a month ago. How often were your previous CLIs occurring?

Don't recall, but it was every few months, I think. I'm sure you're right that they're just telling me I can't win a CLI less than a month after another!

There are some who have gotten cli in consecutive months. There just is no way to figure out if you will get one until you hit the luv button. My schedule is set on $500 every 3 months going on 2 years with 2 different cards, no matter how much i spend or smash. AJC SPECIALS indeed

I read an article a couple of weeks ago (I think it was in the WSJ) that Discover is cracking down on limits. They’re to not going to give as many CLI & they will actually be lowering limits on some of those that don’t use much credit. I’m waiting for them to lower mine since I rarely use my Discover.

Hey,

I believe it may have something to do with you not using their card. From my perspective (maybe theirs as well), if you don't use their card, there's no reason for them to give you a credit line increase, maybe that's what they mean by "Insufficent experience with current Discover card credit limit" as you haven't been using a good % of your limit, let's say.

I got my card in March of this year with a SL of $1200. I immediately took advantage of a 10% BT offer I had for $500 of it. June I got a CLI via luv button and DDing on a call, almost doubling my line ($2200). Ended up getting an auto that kinda screwed with my line and decreased it until I called in. Got another CLI in August for $200. Haven't gotten one since.

Since I got it I went from spending barely anything on it to now (since maybe July-August?) typically spending 50%-90% of my limit.

I PIF every month all active transactions and chipped away at the BT little at a time. Was kind of expecting something when my statement closed last week, not only because it seemed to be on track, but also since I paid it off to a $0 balance and from how much I've been charging - but got denied for the same reason.

Just to give you "not enough experience" club members some hope to keep fighting, after receiving 3 increases (about 30 day apart) after card opening from 4k to 10k, I became a club member after 9/30/17 with 22 straight denials. Finally on 8/22/18 I got an approval for 1.5k, denied again on 9/23 but another 1.5k approval on 10/16/18, and then tonight (11/17/18) got another for 2k making the total 15k.

A proud member of that “Insufficient Experience” club myself!

Got dozens of those “prestigious” letters!

Was on a 7 month approval cycle til 4 days ago when given a $3.9K approval 5 months after last CLI. Only took $3.8 though to round out my new CL to a better rounded $15.5K!

Average spend of about $600 a month.

Yes and no. Before the end of 1 year cashback (May 2018) I was putting pretty heavy spending (2% general and 10% category 1k+/month) through it but was denied every time, after 1 year mark spending dropped dramatically ($50-$150) until late October when I nearly maxed out the quarterly 1.5k 5% limit with one Amazon purchase for business inventory, then nothing since. Mix bags.

I think trying to correlate Discover CLIs with spending patterns is an exercise in futility, best to just base your spending on maximizing rewards and CLIs will come soon or later, as long as the profile is kept clean and UTI low.
