Got denied a CSP because someone else used my SSN to get the signup bonus. Now What?

Tried applying for the CSP today and got an instant rejection. I tried calling up the reconsideration hotline, and was told I was automatically rejected because I received the signup bonus when I got my CSR 2 years ago. However, I've never had a CSR or a chase card in general. I told the person talking to me.

After some digging, I was told that someone used my SSN when applying for a CSR. The mistake was eventually fixed (I guess why I've never seen this on a credit report before), but the signup reward was still credited to my SSN so there is literally nothing they can do to approve me for the card, and I just will have to wait until 2021 and the 48 months are up.

Do I have any options, or am I really out of luck?

Probably out of luck. Seems like an odd reason to outright deny the card though versus just denying the SUB like Amex.

How are your FICO scores? Any late payments, collections, bankruptcy history?

It just really seems odd to deny based on a SUB, especially if the issue was fixed in the system.

FICO is good 750-800, no late payments. Only 1 credit card for 4.5 years with a $2K limit though.

However I was told there was no hard inquiry ever done so that's good. From what I was told, they fixed the CC being under the wrong SSN, but the SUB was credited to my SSN and there's no way to fix it. She said she tried to force approve me but the system didn't allow her.

yeah seriously. Anything you'd recommend? The Chase Trifecta seemed like a good way to go - but right now I'll happily choose someone else to go with.

Do you have any recommendations? An amex seems pretty solid, but I feel like it's accepted in less places and I'd prefer a visa or mastercard.

Only 1 card with a $2,000 SL may have been part of it as well. Chase usually wants to see limits like what they are going to give you, and the CSP is a 5k minimum. If you really want into Chase I would suggest the Freedom or Freedom Unlimited. I started with a Freedom in Jan. 2016, added a Freedom Unlimited in Dec. 2016 when they were fairly new, and a CSP in May 2017.

You should check for Discover and AMEX pre-qualifies.

Hi @Anonymous, this is the kind of issue that regular CSRs often have trouble with.

At this point if it were me I would give one of the numbers from our sticky thread a try. If you are able to escalate the issue to the right person it's possible they will be able to help you, since it seems they have acknowledged that they know it wasn't you who applied for the card previously. Yeah I figured I'd try for the CSP since I'm planning on doing a lot of traveling in the immediate future so it'd be nice to have one. Didn't have a plan if I got rejected though lol.

There was no hard inquiry done though (at least that's what I was told), and it was solely on the fact that the SUB was claimed.

Update, called recon again and another person told me pretty much the same information but was much more helpful. He confirmed that there is nothing his department can do, but gave me the number of the fraud department and said they should have a process to clear that up. (Because there is no way someone else should get approved with my SSN under a completely different name and details).

Welcome to the fourms!

The advice that UncleB gave you is probably your best bet.

You can try googling Chase Credit Card executive office and talking to them if you are unable to get the issue resolved with the fraud dept.

I'm suprised they wouldn't approve you for the card though even without the SUB.

Can you clarify that a little bit for informational purposes.

All these bloggers and people rave about Chase and their "excellent" customer service but honestly I've never found them to be all that helpful compared to Amex and Discover. Usually Chase is a royal PITA when anything goes wrong.

There's always Amex and their trifecta if things dont happen to go your way or become to much of a headache.

Yeah, it's really suprising that there was nothing the lending department could do. Here's all the information I have:

I applied for a Chase Sapphire Preferred and was immediately given the message "Unfortunately we cannot approve you right now. Please wait 7-10 days for our reasoning for this decision." When I called the status number, all it said was that my appliation was pending and I should receive in formation in 2 weeks.

I called the recon# and they said my application was immediately turned down because I hit the SUB in March 2017 with a Chase Sapphire Reserve (meaning that no hard inquiry was every performed). When they looked into why this might be, they found that there was an application from that time with a completely different name, address, dob, etc. but it was using my SSN. The account is closed and the card was changed from being under my SSN. Furthermore, all of my credit reports since then show no history of this occuring. How this was ever approved is beyond me and the analysts on the phone. They tried overriding the "system", manually reopening the application or approving me for the card, but the "system" wouldn't let them.

The second person on recon said he's run into this once before and knows there is nothing he can personally do. He gave me the number of a fraud department to call, saying that he'd imagine that they would have a system in place because there is no reason this should be under my record. I'll try calling them up tomorrow and see what happens.

What a nightmare guys. I called the # to the fraud department that I was given and basically I was just put me on hold for half an hour while he gathered information. He then tried to forward me to the customer service(?) department, but they had a pretty busy wait, so he said they would call me back. After about an hour of waiting, this lady who seemed like she had no idea what was going on attempted to explain things (incorrectly) and told me wrong information, but whatever. She then said my best bet was to go in person to a chase bank. I went to the nearest location, waited in there for a while until a rep was able to sit down with me. He basically talked on the phone for a while, got some confusing information, asked a few questions, etc. Basically there was no immediate resolution and they "escalated" the issue and said I would be contacted later.

In total I spent about 2:30 hours today working on correcting this. I'll update if I ever do get contacted.
