Discover CLI success for anyone?

I read a lot of posts that people are getting frequent and hefty credit limit increases with their Discover iT cards.

I got the card back in September 2017, but every single request (for increases) I have tried online and over the phone have been denied. After about 11 months, they auto increased me from $1,800 to $2,200, but since then I have asked for increases and they all are denied.

I have used my card responsibly, carried a bit of a balance but paid it down to below 30 percent now. I have scores of about 640-650 according to recent score retrievals.

What does Discover want from me to get my limit increased? I would really like to get it higher to help with utilization rates.

Discover seems to have their own method of doing things. Some are able to get nice increases while others like myself only get $300 or so each time. I don't really have an answer for you just my experience.

There are probably hundreds of threads asking the same thing. Nobody knows. All we know is they like heavy use and for you to utilize what they've given you. If you're only using $300 a month, they're probably not giving you anything more. But again, for some people, they didn't start get increases until they stopped using their card. No rhyme or reason to it.

Hi OP

I honestly don’t know where you’re reading these posts about people getting hefty and frequent Disco CLIs. (We wish).

From one of our favorite posters @AverageJoesCredit, he describes the Discover CLI process as a “bunch of monkeys in a back room throwing darts” 😂🤣 (don’t quote me verbatim) to determine when and in what amount a CLI is granted—no matter your scores, no matter length of time you’ve had the card, no matter usage, no matter if PIF! And there are seemingly many posters who agree with him. Me included.

Disco cannot be pinned down. There are all kinds of reasons for their denials. The most frequent one is “Not enough experience with credit limit.” Say what? And when one is approved, it could be a measly $500. Okay, I digress, something is better than $0!

Now, I’ve been kind of lucky starting at $3.5K in 2016 and now at $15.7K. But I’ve also gotten many, many of those denials. Once I got $700 but declined it. A week later I hit it again and got $2,200. Just last week, I got a “no soup for you!” Yep, extremely unpredictable Disco is.

So, many of us on the forum have come to accept it—well maybe—and come to the conclusion that there’s no rhyme or reason for Disco’s algorithm. So you just have to keep bashing the CLI button (no HP) like the rest of us and hope one day your luck changes.

This isn't true above. The best increases I've gotten have come from months where I've used the card very little, (say) $5-$200 total, where months that I've given them a $3k+ spend I didn't see anything CLI wise.

Nah, I've got over 60 and have built my limit up pretty solid. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and their computer sending out denial letters doesn't waste any human beings time.

Darn Discover. Besides that first year match of cash back, which I used as a credit card payment, they really haven't been all that valuable to me.

for me at least, the best success with getting larger increases is making large payments and frequent payments throughout the month. For example, if I only make one payment during the month, on the next request they will only give me a low increase, if i make about 4/5 payments throughout the months, they give me high increases. Im not sure if theres a method to my madness but ive doubled my limit in 6 months doing it this way.

I got my card about a year ago. They initially approved me with a $9500 CL. Over the next ~6 mo, I hit the luv button all the time and got the card up to $18200. Most of my CLI were $3000. Over that time, I on and off carried a balance, no higher than about ~$4000. But then I hit a wall. I was carrying a balance and every month getting denied. So this last month, I completely paid my balance down to $6.40 (pending charge hit right on the statement close date *eyeroll*). I waited for the statement close, and hit the luv button, and they offered me $500. So it seems that for me, as long as I was making large payments, they were fine with increasing, but when they saw I sat with a balance for a while, it seemed to make them nervous, and they backed off. I didn't accept this last CLI, and I'll see what they offer next month. It could also be that I've hit my cap with them, but we'll see how far I can push it.

On the other side, my wife got her Disco around the same time, and every time she hit the luv button, they would only ever offer a couple of hundred dollars. They were not showing her much luv at all, and she and I have very similar credit profiles. Then, randomly last week, they auto CLI her with a $3000 increase. And there were no major changes to her usage/balance. In fact, the only change to her profile was opening a different card to BT a loan we had for a furnace for a longer 0% offer, which dropped her scores a bit, which wouldn't seem to have been a reason for them to auto increase.

So, the monkies banging on drums is a pretty accurate statement. I'm a pattern person (analyst by trade), and I have yet to be able to recognize any pattern with their CLI methods.

Just keep trying OP. Eventually you'll break through. Discover is unpredictable. I've gone 9 months at a time without anything. Then all of a sudden. Bam!! I'll get one. Just got two tonight surprisingly! One on each CC. I may not see anymore for a while. Who knows?

They always come after the statement cuts, not a day sooner.

When you say this above, are you receiving auto-CLIs or are you talking self-initiated CLIs that you're requesting after statement cuts?

An item to keep in mind OP, and while not a deterrent, if you've had a BK since 2016 that tends to be a factor in how your account is evaluated. So, given the SL you obtained a year post-BK, that's definitely not too bad at all, including where it sits today. Bear in mind that it'll be a futile effort to discern any patterns or try to figure out how Discover really works.

I never get any credit mail. No offers, preapprovals, nada! So its quite fun receiving like 4 Discover denials in one day. Just dont shred then too fast if you are expecting a check😏

While I think that's generally true when comparing different profiles between members, I do think that on a long enough timeline (several years or longer) one may be able to begin to discern patterns on their own account. For example, a pattern I've seen twice on my account in the ~3 years I've had it is a period of 6-10 months with no CLIs at all, followed by a 6 month period with 3-4 CLIs coming during that span. I have also received (and not received) CLIs both when my spend was both heavy at > $1000 for several cycles and when my spend was nothing or next to nothing for several cycles... so to me, spend is irrelevant on my profile, where time in one form or another is.

Well I have only had the card since Sept. 2017, but to only go from $1800 to $2200 (auto increase) and then be denied every single manual request is quite puzzling!

Are you an exception, or the norm? It's also why I added after that statement that some people didn't get growth until they stopped using the card. A member here just posted a thread where Disco gave them a huge CLI because their card was about to be shut down for non-use. I've never seen that before.
