Greetings team -

AMEX customer for 13 years

Delta Platinum, Clear, and a business SimplyCash Plus

Just closed a One card last week.

Looking at some of the cards, they all state "you are pre-approved, Get a decision in as little as 30 seconds" but they all have an interest range, not a firm interest rate.

I looked at the Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and the Blue Cash Preferred - all the same, a range, not a firm number.

Preapproved for the Platinum, there is a firm rate for cash advances for it.

Just curious if a range is normal when one gets the pre-approved message or if I need to wait a bit to see a firm interest rate.

Thanks much.

In my experience if it says "you are preapproved" it is usually pretty solid, if it asks you to "expand your membership" then no.

Your scores are great, UTI is in check, 13 years of history, and a preapproval. I would be super surprised if you were declined for anything that they have. If something interests you, then I would say apply.

I agree with the poster above. If it says "you are preapproved" you're most likely to be approved but if it says "expand your membership" then you're most likely gonna get a denial.

It is normal to see a range. Pre-approved language is a firm offer of credit. You are good to go if you'd like to apply!

Not sure about that "Pre Approval" thing on AMEX. I got approved for the ED Blue preferred card and it didn't say I was approved for anything when I logged onto Amex, entered my info and hit the submit button.......nothing. I said what the hell....and completed the application anyhow and got approved for that card. So just because it doesn't give you a list of cards you're pre approved for that isn't set in stone and I'm proof of that.

Correct. Seeing a preapproval means you’re good to go. Not seeing a preapprovals does NOT mean you’ll be denied, it just means you take your chances with the application.

I'm still awaiting a "pre-approval" offer when logged in. I select "Apply Now" on every card so far and I keep getting the dreaded "Expand your membership".

AMEX Gold Card Opened 02/23/19

How does your profile look? Scores, derogs, other cards/limits, any BK? It may be that you qualify but aren’t yet on the Amex SP radar. Sometimes you just have to go for it and see what happens. Amex cobranded cards have more lenient underwriting than their core cards, and it’s said that in the core cards, the charge cards are easier to get than the revolvers. It may be worth a cold-app if your profile is strong enough. Back in November there were several of us who cold-apped for their Delta Gold and/or Hilton Honors cards and got in with scores not typically thought of as being Amex-worthy, in the 640 range. Strength of profile is big with them and once you’re in, your existing relationship and history with them makes a big difference.

EDIT: after I posted, I saw you have the Gold. At this point they do know you and your profile, so it’s likely that waiting for a preapproval is best.
