I would love to have a real pay pal credit card but they send me an invitation then turn me down and its very hurtful they shouldnt lead people on this world is hurtful enough believe me.

Was it an "invitation to apply"? As the name suggests, this is pretty meaningless, any one can APPLY for a card with or without an invitation. Even real preapprovals can lead to a decline, so getting this doesn't indicate anything about your chances. Still, sorry you were declined.

I get this offer every so often as well, but have never been able to find a reason to pull the trigger..

The SUBs are pretty meh. I think the latest one I got was 6 months 0%APR.

The 2% is nice, but really that comes out to 0.5% more than what I get now on non category spend, which is maybe $50 a month for me, so $0.25 more in a month with a lot of misc spending.

Am I missing something?

It can vary from person to person. I wouldn't say they are a joke. A lot of people get nice limits with them.

There's a lot of factors involved outside of credit score/missed payments. For a $300 limit I'll bet there is something there that worried them at least a bit.

No, not missing anything, just that for people with more non-cat spend it will be worth it (2% is 33% more than 1.5%, so "Want to increase your rewards by 33%!!!?" Sounds like a good idea!)

One other thing is that there are a handful of places where it can open up new possibilities. For example, paying taxes.

Pay1040.com charges a 1.87% fee, so makes no sense to do that with a 1.5% card. But it can be worthwhile with 2%, so if you are paying (as I assume most of us are) a tax bill in the $10M range that's an extra $13K!

I don't know what they base their "invitation to apply" on, but I do not think it is your credit score. I think it may be your use pattern of traditional Paypal, eg to pay for stuff you buy on ebay or wherever.

I got weekly invitations early this year when my scores were in the low 500s, finally applied, insta-rejected. This is before I started working on my credit or really knew much about what was realistic to apply for.

It's not exactly dishonest, but I think they should improve their process. Base it on soft pulls or something at least kind of meaningful.

I was just looking at my email from paypal, and right at the bottom (just above the unsubscribe instructions), there is this statement:

"THIS IS AN ADVERTISEMENT."

It looks like it is just a mass mailed invite they send out.
