topic Denied Apple Card for debt obligations in Credit Card Applications

I was denied an Apple Card for two reasons:
- Your monthly debt obligations are too high given your income - examples may include credit card, loan, or housing payments
- Your monthly debt obligations are too high given your income - examples may include loan or monthly housing payments

Score: 698
Annual Income: 24000

I have no debt of any kind and I only have one AMEX card that I am an authorized user on which is paid in full each month. This would be my first personal credit card. My parents spend far more on their AMEX each month than my monthly income (also paid off in full each month). I’m assuming that could be the issue? My monthly spending on my card has been high lately but still paid in full each month with no balance on my cards or my parents.

Should I have myself removed as an authorized user and try again?

Apple Card denied - DPs

So, here's some DP for those who might be interested. I got an invite to apply this morning, went to apply as soon as I got the invitation. Goldman Sachs pulled TransUnion with a score of 680. The one and only reason it was denied was because: You have recently been past due

Vantage 3.0 is 651 as of 8/8/2019
FICO8 is 645 as of 8/2/2019
FICO9 is 676 as of 7/18/2019

Reported income: 76.8k
Util: 18% of $11,400

My three current credit cards are 11 months old. Federal student loans, currently paying. I had charged off student loans, but that has since been removed from my report.

I've never went past due on any of my accounts. The only baddies I have on my account is BK7 discharged 2017, already past 2 years. On my FICO app, I do show I have 6 late payments and last time was 2 years 1 month - but that's my IIB accounts. When I pulled my annual credit reports in the past, they do not show I have late payments, just accounts with IIB.

Is there a recon line? Or do we know if "recently been past due" is actually a cover for BK7? Let me know if you're curious to learn more about my DP.

[Edited to add] I confirmed with TransUnion just now that it was a soft pull, not a hard pull. All my 6 accounts, they see them marked as IIB, and nothing else is showing anything past due.

I highly doubt there's a method for reconsideration at the moment. Other folks who've been denied explored similar avenues with no outcome.

Relating a 2 year old bk7 as just, " only baddie" isnt the best way to view it. Thats a pretty significsnt reason , and relatively recent bk that can still have repercussions with apps for years to come. Just remember lenders can put up a variety of reasons for denial when in fact its that bk that they dont like.

I spoke with a superviser and he is in Goldman Sachs. This is NOT a recon line, but he said he can see more details but unable to share with me because he is not a credit analyst. But for my situation where the reason for denial reading "recent past dues" is inaccurate, so the superviser will escalate my request in hopes to provide more explanation.

He tried to pad the reason for rejection when explaining to me the list of contributing factors to my scores like severe delinquent or derogatory (BK), but I argue that this is what contributes to my scores.

Because I am interpreting "past dues" as late payments, not BK. Am I wrong to think this way?

While applying for credit, I do get rejections with the reasons of BK.

Same. TU score 723. 3% utilization. No other hits, inquiries, BK’s. Last late payment was 7 years ago.

Called TU and they said there were no recent past due payments, so they’re investigating, but not expecting a different outcome. I’ve seen a few other people say they were declined for this reason with no recent past dues, wonder what the deal is.

Last negative was 2 years 3 months ago. Unsure what it’s referring to - Experian doesn’t show any details on what that means - but it’s most likely a hard inquiry for another card I applied for about that time (and was approved for).

The one account I’m waiting to drop off my report was sent to collections and was charged off. Settled back in 2013, and the estimated date it’ll be removed from my credit report is in October. That’s the only account that I’m thinking might be causing it, but it’s not really a “recent past due”.

Am I wrong to think this way?

While applying for credit, I do get rejections with the reasons of BK. But this one didn't specify that, but specified past dues.

Yes, because bankruptcy typically forces you to miss your payments. Most lenders won't go back further than 2 years to cite recent past dues, but like what's been said before, BK is as bad as it gets now that judgements are no longer reported.

I received denial of "recent past due" with 718 TU score and $131,000 income. I have a past due that is over 4 years old. Have CSP with 22,400 limit and with 3% util and really don't know what they are looking for as far as customer base. On reddit some have been approved with far less income and low to middle 600s score. Approvals seem totally random.

I would imagine that the people that got in early with mediocre scores are all lucky.

I'm sure many of millions of people want the new apple card, and there is no way they can extend them all credit the first week.. I think as time goes on, they'll tighten the requirements and can pretty much pick and choose who they let in.

This whole process is newe to both Goldman Sachs and Apple.. They'll learn and adapt pretty quickly..
