Bank Of America Reconsideration?

Hey All;

Has anyone had any luck getting reconsideration for a card from Bank Of America?

I was declined on the Alaska Airlines Visa for too many inquiries (refinanced the house, car etc) and late payments (most recent was 5 years ago.. my credit has been so cleaned up since then)... American Express just increased my line to 5k, and I got a 10k PenFed Visa... all other cards are over 5k. Bankcard scores are 695eq, 703tu and 714ex.

I will say... back when I was 19 (16 years ago lol) I sort of "burned them" when I was young and stupid with my first credit card... not sure how long their memory is... but even American Express has warmed up to me over the years.

The two numbers posted online for B Of A reconsideration dont work... Customer Service said (twice) that I needed to write a letter to Card Services in San Antonio and that they would get back to me in 7-10 days... it's been 30, and not heard anything back.

I wrote a very nice letter explaining the source of my inquiries in the last year, and explaining how my credit has improved and money management has been on track in the 5 years since I had a late payment... asked them to give me a chance with a $500 credit limit (which in the T&C's for that card is the minimum) or a secured version of it (16 years ago they offered a secured version... I know from past experience). I also followed up two weeks ago.

Does anyone have an updated reconsideration number or address? I know both CSRs I spoke to gave me the San Antonio address (PO Box 15019)... but no love...

Any ideas? I figured my next step would be to try and rain letters across multiple B of A addresses, and maybe even a few at Alaska Airlines. I've ended up needing to travel a chunk lately, Alaska is my preferred airline, and I could really use the free baggage that this card offers. It wouldn't replace my Bonvoy Brilliant for everyday spend -- but definitely would get all my airfare and maybe even replace my Citi Costco as the "Visa when they won't take AmEx" card.... so I'd be happy with whatever I can get lol

N

Since you have called twice and have sent a letter, and if the letter doesn't work I would just move on . I don't think continuing to bombard them with letters is going to work .

There are other lenders out there.

As mentioned above, BoA isn't known for reconsideration successes these days.

Most decisions are automated and UW analysts aren't able to override (with very few exceptions), especially if declined for inquiries and/or new accounts in the past 6-12 months, more so the past 6 months.

OP

IMHO, Dont be the applicant who cant accept that no means no. A record is kept of every call, every email, every letter; so do you really want to be known as the applicant whom CSRs groan, "oh no, it's him again," even if you're nice about it.

As others have said, there are way more fish in the sea.

They refuse to give me CLI or even product change my card just because of my high number of inquiries.

I'd say your best bet is to wait 6 months with no inquiries and try again.

I haven't gotten my explanation letter, but I have opened 3 new cards since last summer and had one other hard inq. Also showing a BK 13, but that is already over 5 years old with no other black marks. I have had 2 BoA checking accounts and 1 savings account (joint with my wife) for at least 15-20 years, so I don't think prior relationships really mean much to them.

The U.S. Price card is a nice card. I too, want that card design.

I guess it's a YEMV. While it may or may not help having an account. I don't think it would hurt to have an account with BoA. I recall reading on these forums, one of the situations stated depository relationship? I don't recall the exact details.

Also, one could also Direct Deposit ACH in and out any funds to meet their requirements to avoid any maintenance fees.

You saw my recent MLB approval thread That one was pretty clearly done due to my existing relationship with Merrill.

You don't see this type of DP mentioned here often but there are a number of them elsewhere where applicants without any existing accounts with BoA would be approved for a business card on the condition that they open up a CD, IIRC $1500 was a common figure cited.

Yes. I read your approval, congrats again! You would think they would throw you an extra $100 so you can break the six figure mark.

I agree, from what I have read, I think BoA is a relationship type of bank, subject to the strength of one own's profile.

Especially, since you've been a long time account holder. I'm not quite sure how their computer algorithms are set up. I think they appear to be tightening up on the credit side from the post I've read.

I was told over the phone by the BofA customer service rep that I was pre-approved, and then denied. I placed two recon calls with the supervisor on the 2nd call referencing no baddies in six years, but no luck. Full disclosure: I burned BofA in the BK, but allowed myself to falsely assume that keeping deposits for many years would allow them to overlook it. They offered a secured-card, but I took the community's advice and passed on it.

@coldfusion wrote:

@AllZero wrote:

@coldfusion wrote:

@AllZero wrote:

@vic6string wrote:

@AllZero wrote:
If you haven't done so all ready, perhaps open a checking, savings account while you bide your time.

I just got denied for a BoA US Pride Visa card (one of the pretty versions of the cash rewards).

I have had a love-hate relationship with BoA. Back in 1999, I have checking and savings with BoA when I lived in Phoenix. When I moved, there were no BoA branches in my area so I drained my account via ATM and left it at that. Fast forward 3 years and I had accumulated service charges on my open but empty checking account to the sum of $180 which I found out about when I went to "open" a "new" checking account at the new BoA branch in my area. At the time that was half of my paycheck and that was a no go.

15 years later when I was re-establishing my credit this go-round I received an offer from BoA in the mail after establishing my credit with Cap 1 for about 9 months. BoA extended $1K SL on a cash rewards card which has grown to a Visa Signature with a $13K CL.

Last August I applied for an Amtrak Travel Rewards and was declined to my dismay. I called to recon (I don't remember where I got the number) and was told by UW that I had too many inquires and to wait until November to reapply and I would have better success. I was also told that having a BoA checking account might also increase my chances of a successful application.

Then in October, Chase offered me a preapproval for a CSP at 5/24 and that delayed applying for the Amtrak Travel Rewards for another year.
