AMEX 61-day 3X CLI...denial

I can't be the only one who got denied...I'd like to hear how everything turned out with future CLI requests or auto CLI.

For me, I had a SL of 1k and have a lot of student loan late payments from a few yrs ago. But, I was declined for too many new accounts or inquries. I know that I can technically request a CLI anytime. But, do they actually reconsider the request each time or are they somehow using the same credit report for X days or automatically handing out the same decision for X days?

I was denied my first 2 times on a 1K starter. My score was borderline so I understood.

DW applied for BCP and received the IV request. She/we complied and all of the sudden Amex opened the doors for me.

They go by the monthly score they pull and show to you. If it improves they will use that one in my experience. They soft pull constantly. I really believe they want to approve.

More often then not 1K SLs do not usually get the CLI at 61 days.

It's actually more common to be denied than it is to be approved. $500-1000 limits especially. People hype it up too much round these parts.

I"m in my 7th year post BK13 (falls off in Dec). Finally got in the door with AMEX (never had one before) they gave me the Blue Preferred $1000CL. Tried at least twice for CLI.....DENIED! lol Always say the reason is my BK13.

Don't worry. You are not the only one. I got denied so many times while trying to follow the amex cli rules but it doesnt work for me. It varies from people to people. You might want to wait for 6 months after. While waiting try to use your card and pay it off. Sometimes leave a little bit balance on a statement (less than 30%) and pay it off again. That way they may be reconsidering about giving you more credits using their cli algorithm. It took me 4 years plus to get the 19800 from 7800 SL. They are many people here that have more knowledge about amex CLI and if you follow their advice it would be great help.

I was denied at 61 days too. 1k SL on Delta Gold. What I wish I had known at the time was that their score reporting is a month or so behind, meaning they do not go by the score you see on their website, rather the score that you saw roughly a month ago. Go back and look what they used the month prior and it will give you a better idea of what you are working with.

Pretty much same story here. I got my BCP a day after the 5 Year anniversary of my bk13 filing with a 5k SL. Amex was not IIB in that bk, BUT I did burn them for like 2k or something in a bk7 about 18 years ago. I went for the CLI after about 70 days (didn't ask for much....I think I just put 7500) and got the instant "NO". Reason on the letter was bankruptcy, which I assume is the latest one because if it was the old one they wouldn't have given me the card to begin with...much less with a 5k limit.

it may depend on when you call or when you get your credit report each month. i called them and they gave me the denial reason and volunteered up the score and date of the credit report, which was the same date as the monthly credit report that they show me. same score, too. this was 8 days after i got the credit score on the site. ...also, i don't know if this is a factor, but some of the credit report services may have a date of say 02/20, but they probably pulled that report a week before they displayed it for you. i can't recall if amex holds the report for a while.

My 500 SL was denied a CLI @ 61 days. Auto 2x to 1k @ around 5 months. At roughly same time, got a 2nd card w/ 1k SL. This 2nd card got 2X to 2k @ 6 months (when 1st biz card was issued @ 2k SL), and another 2X to 4k @ 12 months. Also, 2nd Biz card issued at this time @ 9k SL.

So, from 500 CL to 16.5k CL in about 18 months -- I'm growing on them. Be patient & you'll grow on them too.

The CLI at 61 days is pretty much not applicable for anyone with a 1K SL on a new card. I was also denied at 70 days on my 1K SL Delta Gold. They care about the score and the factors in it. Just because you have the card and paying it monthly is not enough.

I pass around $2500 or so through my card, daily swipes, every day spend, PIF few times a month - you would think that it would trigger them to be like, "okay, fine, you need more room", but no. The reason you (and I) got a 1K SL is because they saw something they did not like, but were willing to give us a chance. But once they've let you in the door, they take their time to build trust - speically with someone who had a score that warranted the 1K SL in the first place. The stories of 61 day increases are nice to read on here but they don't apply to everyone and are not a global Amex "rule".

Work on the root cause of your score being low and why you got that 1K SL. Only that will yeild you results with not only Amex but with every other creditor.

I think its 60-90 days now before you can request it again without being an automatic denial. I tried the 61 day on my DWs BCP- 2k and asked for 6 and no dice. Her reported score is 798 with 0 bads on it. I cant get the stupid check your application site to show the reason of the denial either. Its never worked for us since like 2012!!!

I guess i must be one of the lucky ones..... have had my card since Nov of 2019 with a SL of 1k. Have asked for and been approved for 3x every time with the exception of the last time - only got 2x. FICO scores in low 700's. util on card 2%. overall util at approx 29%. 5 inq. no baddies. i know after reading about people not having any luck with a 1k SL i was scared to ask, but i have been pleasantly suprised at the CLI approval. so I guess there is hope for some....

Have been with Amex for 10 mos now and have tried faithfully for 3x and denied every time, my scores are almost 700 except equifax, i have same cl of $1000, I run about $1500 through mine faithfully a month, but I'm about to close both my Amex accounts, I don't need to wait around on Amex to give me a cli when I'm increasing my scores weekly and can't get a cli, my total uti is now 3%, every decline letter says my score is the reason but my scores have increased 70 points since my initial approval at 635 or 645, so I figured I can close both and move on to being faithful to discover and BoA and NFCU

that's an insane score and denial. i'd definitely call them to find out the reason. the rep gave me this # to call 800-952-7562. the system may say that it has no app on file for you. after that, i believe that you tell the system that you want to speak to a rep. when they ask if you want to tt the rep about the app, say yes. the person answering will just start telling you that you were declined and to wait for the letter. but, you can ask for the reason.

"I'm about to close both my Amex accounts"

i feel you. i won't close mine, though bc that won't take away the hp or new account stat on my report lol.

My BCE had a starter limit at $1K. I tried at 61 days and was denied. A little while afterwards, they gave me an auto CLI to $3K. It then went to $9K and $24K.
