Most profiles would have 50 points or more loss from that.

The starting score is irrelevant. And the exact amount of loss is irrelevant if someone were to run up temporary utilization (without changing other factors) and not be hung up about the exact point loss. (I was showing that the effect of utilization is quite temporary and it quickly rebounds. And I wasn't suggesting to do this if someone needed to maximize score before applying for new credit.)

I agree that some people might have more than a 29-point loss, and this was only one of my scores. But whether it is 30 points or 50 points, it will come back to equilibrium very fast after the utilization declines. So regardless of all other factors, if someone just added a higher temporary utilization and then paid it off as I illustrated would have the exact same effect. Their score would dip and then return to the starting point.

In my case, I'll note that I got almost all my credit score back even before my new "zero" balance posted. Last utilization was still up around 20%.

Someone with an 850 is going to be less concerning to lenders than someone with 700s or less who has the same or larger drop. I won't ever advocate for someone to get a card and then let it report a maxed out balance. The people who advocate this are always 6 figure earners with very long credit histories. It doesn't work the same for the rest of us.

I get the illustration point but plenty of people will look at that and say "gee, it was only 29 points, I can do that!" Then they are in for a rude awakening when their scores plummet and they start losing cards or having limits slashed.

Not to derail the Navy FCU thread, but we're mixing two separate discussions here and I need to clarify.

 1) How will high utilization affect credit score?

 2) How will high utilization affect adverse action ... including (possible) credit limit decreases and/or card closures from one or more lenders?

My original post about high utilization was to @EverForward who wrote: " ... I'll be sure to actively use both cards, up to 28.9% indiv, 8.9% total." The mention of specific utilization rates as-if they were hard never-to-be-exceeded limits made me feel a little further discussion might be helpful. I believe there is a lot of misunderstanding about utilization. So the point of my charts was to illustrate item #1 above. However, you're focusing more on item #2 above.

So again, in terms of affect on credit score alone (#1), the effects are temporary. Whether the drop with increased utilization is 30 points or 50 points or 75 points, scores will rebound once the utilization is paid back down. So higher utilization is not necessarily to be feared, especially over the short-term and when someone is not applying for new credit.

In regards to #2 above, I agree it is (somewhat) relative to profile and running up a 98% utilization on a new card is not always a wise thing to do. My example was meant to be more of an extreme to demonstrate the credit score effect, not to recommend everyone do this! That said, I also think many people newer to credit concepts get unnecessarily spooked about utilization and not ever exceeding "x-amount". They also mistakenly get the idea that running up high utilization on a single card is as bad as late payments or other derogatories. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

It is true that if someone has very low scores or serious derogatories such as bankruptcies, multiple late payments, or collections, they could be more at risk of adverse action from the lender whose card they ran up or even from their other lenders. So yes, it depends to some degree on credit profile, the amount of utilization we're talking about on one or more cards, the total amount of credit available that was used (total utilization), and the timeframe that it's carried. As with all the advice on MyFico, use with caution as YMMV.

The income comment is an unnecessary distraction. I disagee that income has anything to do with it. I could make $10 Million a year but if I don't pay my bills, my lender will slash my limits or close my cards just as quickly as they would for someone who makes $10,000 a year. As you know, income is not any part of your credit score. And a lender only uses it as a part of the underwriting to assign an initial credit limit. (Even then, there's usually a maximum amount you'll get regardless of income.) Beyond that, as long as you're paying your bills, it doesn't matter. So income directly has absolutely nothing to do with adverse action; it's all about the credit score, credit history, and repayment history. And the ability to repay isn't always income; it could be money from other sources, even including savings, which many banks don't even care about as part of credit card underwriting.

I've disclosed this before, but I haven't always had high six-figure income, high credit scores, and low debt. I also had a very rough financial period many years ago during an unplanned major career transition where I ran up some large five-figure debts and my scores tanked. I spend a long time carrying debts and rolling it between balance transfer offers on cards as well as refinancing my house and clearing out some long-term savings. (Full disclosure, after several job changes, I bottomed out at about $33K supporting a family of five and with debts as high as $75K, IIRC.) At one point, I had some limits slashed and a few cards closed but it wasn't until after I was carrying balances on several accounts and had late payments that any adverse actions started. So it was a high and increasing utilizaton over multiple accounts and over a much longer period of time than three months. My balances were increasing and not being paid down. And THAT is what usually leads to adverse action, not a temporary and well-managed spike in utilization. Since that period where I had the AA on some accounts, I continued to carry balances and even did several transfers to cards where I used up to 90-95% of my existing credit limits. As long as I was paying on time and making progress paying down my balances, there wasn't any further AA.

We won't ever come to an agreement on this point and I'm not going to derail this thread any further. I am firmly in the camp that believes it to be important to not run up high balances and have them report. Nothing you say will ever convince me that this is the wrong way to think and I will never stop telling people to watch their utilization at all times. Income absolutely does play a role in it but that's not a discussion for this thread.

On topic, my CLI request on my Platinum appears to have been declined unless they're running longer than 24 hour turn around time right now. I'm not surprised or even upset about it as I have plenty of credit and it was just a SP anyway. I'll post back if I have a CLI when I go to pay my card off on Friday.

This might be a little off topic, but thought this thread would have the people who knew best acout NFCU..I was just approved for my first NFCU CC last week...I know u can make a payment from your NFCU savings (or checking, I just have a savings) , but is there another way to make a payment? The only reason I am asking is because when I was on my other banks bill pay NFCU came up. It asked for the account number and just the zip code (no sure what that would be) so.it made me question if u are able to.make a bill payment from a different bank to your NFCU card. Also I read before that you can only make so many payments a month with NFCU after that they start putting your payments on hold. Sorry again for changing the subject I just have been searching for the answer and cant find it.

1. NOT Inq sensitive at all!

2. Yes you can pay from other banks bill pay by adding your account number and the payment address off the statement on your navy credit card to pay from another bank.

3. I wouldn't be to concerned about payment holds if you are sending them in through another banks bill pay or unless you are running TONS through the card and paying every couple days... I have never had any issue and I tend to do a lot of moving of money in all my accounts.
