Next Steps - What Card can I get approved for?

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the myFico Family. I just closed on a home Friday, Im looking to see what CC I can apply for to do some work on the home.

I have one collection with EX and one deg with TU (Im working to get these takin care of) I dont want to waste a hard pull.

Thanks in advance for that advice.

Are you elligible for Navy Federal Credit Union? They'd be a good fit with those scores.

All it requires is a relatively close relative (or yourself) to have been a veteran or a member already.

A local credit union would also be a FANTASTIC idea. Don't know where you are located, but they are usually very willing to lend.

@Anonymous Yes. I'm with Navy Federal now. I have just had a secured card with thim graduate to a unsecured card on 5/28. I dont know if I can/should apply for another card if Navy since my card graduated to unsecured card last month.

You're asking the wrong first question.

You need to first ask yourself what you need in a card, then ask what card or cards can meet your need, then you can ask which of those cards you can likely get approved for.

Thanks for the feed back @coldfusion . Im still fairly new at all of this.

I am looking for 0% intro APR with a good CL. I want to use this card to make repairs to my property. I dont really know what else maybe somre cash back, but mostly something I can use for flipping houses and home repair.

Im open to suggestions..

Check out Discover. I've seen them be quite generous even with limited or bad credit history. They have a good prequal site as well. Good luck!

I'd agree with the Discover IT suggestion as it touches on what you're looking for and is tolerant of applicants with blemished credit profiles. It also doubles the cashback amount for the 1st year and the rotating 5% categories sometimes includes home improvement stores which for you might be a nice little bonus. Traditionally they can be reasonably generous with credit limit increases as well although with the current economic climate they've tightened the pursestrings.

You can go to their website and see if you prequalify.

@coldfusion @pinkandgrey Thank you both for the suggestions. Do you think I should do the Discover as I did prequal vs Trying for a different card with navy federal. I was thinking navy federal, but I dont know if that a stupid try since they just upgraded my secured card to unsecured card. What about the Amex Blue Card? - Im just asking so i can understand, like I said im new to all this credit stuff and just got my credit repaired. Again thank you all!

You should read the Navy thread for increases and second cards. If I were you, I'd go for a navy platinum. It's 0% apr on balance transfers and I believe you could just get balance transfer checks to do your home improvements (not 100% sure though). Navy is likely to give you a nice starting limit on your second card also. Good luck.

100% agree with BMoreBull... and yes, you can get another card with them, even though yours just graduated. Read that thread Bmore referenced.

Discover IT is a good second... I'm not a discover guy yet, so I don't ever think to recommend them.

I think it's a bit early for you to try for an AMEX Blue. There's a decent chance that if approved you'd get a $1K starting limit and cards that they issue with a $1K SL grow slowly.

My personal preference would be to go with Discover if I had a preapproval as their preapprovals are pretty solid and I also like diversification among lenders. That being said there's nothing wrong at this point with trying for a 2nd NFCU card.

I would try for the Discover. As I said before, often Disco can be generous and the cards tend to grow well. Discover was one of my first credit cards and I got a 5.5k limit right out of the gate. The limit got to $19,700 after only a couple years.

Thank you all for the advice. I went with both discover and NFCU (since the pull from different breaus). Discover approved me with a 8500 CL! NFCU said I was pre-qual but then when i went to apply I got denied?? I know I still have some bad on my TU report.. BUT Im not worried as I wont be applying for anything else as to save my inquiries. Thanks again everyone!
