Applying for multiple Amex cards at once...how many inquiries?

Does anyone have insight into, if I apply for 2 or 3 different Amex cards on the same day, whether they will do multiple hard pulls or just use the single inquiry to determine eligibility for all 3?

In a month I'm planning to apply for the Gold and Platinum charge cards and the Blue Cash Preferred credit card.

If youre already a amex member you would generally see SP (though a HP is possible), however if this is your first time applying for amex, then ymmv. People have reported that if youre approved for an Amex account that the second application would generally be a SP, but like I said it varies. I also dont know if the third application would be a SP if you are approved but I will say this, you probably will only be able to apply for a single charge card and a revolving card in the same day. I believe you would have to wait if you want to get a second charge card. You would generally want to only get one card and build up a history with them before applying again, which would yield a better chance of an SP and a better SL.

Thank you, I will keep that in mind. Is it advisable to apply for the Platinum and the credit card on the same day or would there be a disadvantage to that? How long would you recommend waiting to get the Gold at that point?

You can apply for the charge card and the revolver the same day. For the second charge card, personally I'd wait awhile, make sure you hit the spend targets for the cards' SUBs, and then watch for the "Seventh_Summit, you're preapproved!" language to indicate that Amex is comfortable and ready to extend additional credit.

I applied for a Gold immediately after I applied and was approved for the Platinum. Status changed to need more information, so I got in the phone with a CSR that the Gold app was canceled since I have to wait 30 days to app for a second charge card. However, I agree with others that you can app for one charge and one revolver in same day using the same pull.

I had an EDP prior to my recent app for the Platinum card. Instant approval but yet to see any notifications on a hard pull fire off.

But if you are a new member (I doubt AU counts in this case) you should expect to see a hard pull for each new application as you have no established history with them.

You can try, but it's going to be YEMV. Their soft rule typically allows or limits one approved revolver every 5-day rolling period and two approved revolvers every 90-day rolling period.

I'm sorry, I don't understand your answer. What is YEMV? Also, are you saying after I apply for a card I would typically have to wait another 5 days to get a soft pull and approval on a 2nd card? Or are you saying I would have to wait 90 days before applying again?

YEMV = Your Experience May Vary

To clarify, the AmEx soft rule for revolvers basically translates to allowing 5 days between the first revolver application and the second one. Some individuals have been able to do it on the same day, some have not, that's why I stated YEMV. No guarantees on the second application being SP either, this is all driven by AmEx AI algorithms. Try it for science and see what that yields for you.

In November 2018 I apped for two Amex cards without history with them and was approved for both. I apped for them because I could use both. It's likely that if OP returns, they will have a similar (or similarly logical) answer.

Understood, but my question is still "why". AX cards, being charge cards (if that's what he's applying for) have no CL and unless they are gathering points for a specific purpose e.g. Delta miles why have both (and pay for both).

Gathering points may well be the purpose. Plat and Gold are both MR earners but the reward categories differ and together they cover a lot of spending range. With both they can get multipliers on airfare, hotels, gas, dining, and groceries, plus the perks of the two cards (dining credits at specific restaurants, UberEats cash, etc). It's wholly conceivable that getting both of those at the same time is perfectly logical. I find plenty of use for them both in my life as well.

Agree, gathering points makes sense. I prefer the AX everyday preferred card, which gives you 50% additional on ALL your purchases after 30 purchases in a billing cycle. Still goes into the same MW account as my AXP. So all the small stuff, which gets 2x and 3x on gas, groceries, etc. to start with, gets multiplied by 1.5 at the end of the cycle, and the big stuff like airfare and airBnB rent goes on AXP.

You mentioned perks for multiple AX cards. I was unaware of that. Can you elaborate? I got my first green card in 1981. I think im entitled to a Centurion Card, but what do I know lol.

No Centurion invites for personal cardholders have gone out for a few years now as far as the credit enthusiast community is aware. Are you consistently running more than $25 million or so a year through your Amex cards? Even with that level of spend, outside of Business Centurion we've seen no offers, and even the Business ones are getting rather rare in the US.

As far as perks on individual cards, examples would be the airline credit, Sak's credit, Uber credits on Platinum, airline and Dell credits on Business Platinum, and the airline (discontinued next year), monthly dining and Uber credits on Gold. For those invested in MRs, the personal Gold is kind of a no-brainer with its 4x on restaurants and groceries, and the Business Platinum's 35% rebate on Amex Travel flight bookings makes it a very easy no-effort way to get 2+ cents per point.

Yes, I've seen the little credits offered by AX, stuff like $5 credit on HBO Max, gas credits, and some Amazon credits I believe, and I've gotten into the habit of logging on the website to check those. There's the Uber credit on platinum too, which is nice. then there's the crap like "...earn 10x points on eligible purchases at U.S. Gas Stations and U.S. Supermarkets with your new Card in the first 6 months," which pisses me off having had the card for 40 years. I thought you meant there was something like "if you have multiple AX cards you get ... something". Plus, those credits and gifts have to completely offset the fee for me to be interested. With the AX everyday preferred, the $95 fee is easily taken care of with points for groceries, gas, etc. plus the 1.5x MR boost at the end of the cycle. Can't say that would work for an additional Green or Gold. My AXP is pure ego.
