Forgot to mention this but for completeness if you're thinking of trying a self-referral, don't do it. AMEX used to tolerate it but it got widely abused and once the RAT got involved a wide swath of abusers had their MR clawed back, accounts closed, and added to the blacklist. It's no longer tolerated.

The title pretty much sums it up. I did search the forums before posting but don't see anything that answers my specific question.

I understand that if one already has an AMEX card that a new application for another product/card is not a hard pull if the application is rejected. If that application is approved then it will be a hard pull.

However, it isn't clear to me if this is also the case when applying through a referral link while logged into your account. Or would it be a hard pull whether if the application is denied because I applied through the link?

I've got the Platinum 100000 MR offer through a referral and am considering applying but wanted to clarify this point before pulling the trigger.

Thanks for the assist everyone.
