AMEX Plat App'd & denied, How long to wait?

A few months ago, I had a payment returned to AMEX on 1 of my accounts. This wasn't my fault, but no matter...I'm responsible. Anyways, As soon as I became aware of this, I notified AMEX even before they knew and I corrected the issue. They assured me it would not affect or become an issue in our relationship. Well, I recently applied for the Platinum and was denied for this specific reason. It said so in the letter. My scores are where they need to be (all 3 F8's hovering around 760's) and I have 4 accounts with perfect history with AMEX. Can anyone offer some guidance as to how much time will need to pass before I should apply again?

Try to recon. If the issue wasn't your fault, you may be able to get them to overturn it.

I'll certainly give them a call tomorrow and see where they are on all this, however I doubt they'll care much about whose fault it might be. Never hurts to ask I'm sure....Just wondering if anyone might have some guidance on timing....

If the issue/error was on the AmEx side, then I can see exploring the discussion with them. Keep in mind that the agents may not be aware of things that happen behind the scenes when your payment is returned the first time and AmEx re-attempts to process the payment, even if they mentioned you'd be "ok".

Typically, if the error isn't on the AmEx side, it can take anywhere from 4-6 months to a year for a denial not to reference the returned payment. Hopefully others can chime in to share their experiences.

What was this exact error? I had transposed a number wrong on my banking info once and I corrected it and the payment was reprocessed, they also told me it wouldn't be held against me. They lied I could not get any increases or another card for about a year .

Payments (including the one referenced in this discussion) were scheduled against an account funded by a "large'ish" deposit. The deposit was a regularly deposited check (not a payroll check) that had been recieved at least half a dozen times before and not held as security for any reason. Inexplicably, the one that caused this mess was held for 2 business days. I had no knowledge of this. This caused a payment to an AMEX Hilton card to be returned unpaid. I have not needed OD protection for many years so there was nothing in place to guarantee the payment. I was notified by automatically of the issue, so I immediately moved $$'s, to no avail. A day later, the hold was released and the damage had been done. There was nothing I could do except wait for things to play out. Hence, this discussion. Needless to say, I will never be without some form of payment protection in the future. The payment was reprocessed without issue.

I'm not trying to be petty here, but in your original post, you mentioned this returned payment wasn't your fault. After the explanation above, just for the sake of posterity, it should be noted that this may indeed fall on your side of the fault. This wasn't an AMEX issue by any means. One should only schedule payments out when funds are verified available. This is, indeed, the truest of the true returned payments - a payment was made against an account that had insufficient funds.

Unfortunately the error was on your side , you may be in the doghouse with them for several months . Since this was not their error I don't think they will budge .

For *sure* don't have anything else happen with them for awhile, or you may find yourself under the doghouse. Or worse, kicked out of the yard. I don't mean to sound personally critical of you, but as someone older, I think it's almost a fact of nature - walk close to the edge and eventually, you're going to go over. Mothers and wives usually forgive, Amex maybe not so much.

Don't get discouraged OP. These things happen, unfortunately. On the upside, it's not a permanent mark. While it may take some time for AmEx to warm up to you, it's definitely possible to be approved at some point. Just gotta let time do its thing
