Apple Card Shopping Cart Trick Fail

I followed the "trick" to apply for Apple card at Apple Store. Approved instantly. But got credit alert from TransUnion. Not very happy about that. I thought there won't any hard pull or credit impact.

Will wait to see if the new account shows up too. This is not what I expected. Do not really need the Apple card. Fancy, but won't put much spending on it.

It is a SP to see your terms and CL. It becomes a HP if you accept the terms and open the account.

Yup, they did a HP on me too for this card at TU. I need to get used to the card. Since it does not have an account number on the card itself.

Different banks.

The original "SCT" was with Comenity and could result in a SP approval

The apple "SCT" is more to get the preapproval to show up and/or have a higher SL. In every case I have read about it results in a HP when you accept.

Really unfortunate that it has been labeled as a "SCT" on this forum as it causes confusion for people familiar with Comenity's SCT.

As others have mentioned, the initial application for approval is a SP, but once you accept the offer it performs the hard pull. I recently was approved for the Apple Card and just received it in the mail. It's the nicest looking card in my wallet, but SL was much lower than I had hoped for.

The Apple trick is independent of the SCT.

To add to the confusion, over the last 2.5 years or so the SCT has itself become a no longer reliable means of approvals via just a soft pull. Quite a few members here found themselves the recipient of an unpleasant surprise when an application triggered a HP. There are a couple of longish threads on the site that had data points as to which cards still were available via SP and those which were more likely to trigger a hard pull.

Thanks @dragontears and @coldfusion for clearing that up! You're both right on target. Every time I see "Apple card" and "shopping cart trick" mentioned together, I'm actually thinking about the Comenity SCT. Hence the confusion!

Maybe some other term could be used for Apple to differentiate it from the 'real' SCT.

I have not found that to be a difficulty at all. The actual number is easy to find and access in the iPhone settings...and the chip/stripe make store use a breeze.

The only reason for my getting the Apple card is not getting a HP. Or I would not have had it. I just hope we all read carefully. Also, only post accurate info...

That said, from the get-go, a variety of Apple Card threads have stated that when you check (via wallet) to pre-qualify it is SP. Then, folks have the options to proceed with the terms displayed, such as the SL and APR or pass. The same applies when the 'Apple Cart Trick' was introduced, folks would load their cart with items, and if presented with the pre-qualification, it was SP at that point. Accepting it would result in a HP. There have been a few posts here or there where it resulted in no HP or things fell through the cracks, but the norm has pretty much been HP after accepting the terms presented. If you look through the Approvals section, a variety of the approved Apple Card results are HP.

My experience was SP once the initial terms were presented and HP once I accepted them.

Apple does an initial soft pull to approve or deny. If and only when you agree to the CL and terms and accept will GS do a final hard pull.

So, the choice is always up to you, the credit card seeker. Say yes, it's a hard pull for the acceptance or say no and the app is cancelled.

Pre-qualification and pre-approval are almost always a SP. So there is nothing special about it. There is no "shopping cart trick" if final application still results in a HP. "Shopping cart trick" always means to avoid a HP at credit approval. Or there is no "trick".

I hope this is something folks need to remember. If Apple card still follows regular application cycle, then do not bring in the "trick" to get folks confused.

I believe at beginning Apple card application did not result in a HP. That was at the beginning I believe.

it is simple, don't assume - just read.

Incorrect... Always sp to get pre approve... Hp to finalize the application.

It has always been this way. Written out in black and white. It is amazing how many people don't read through the terms and conditions....

and some of the same people started referring to the process using the same "Shopping Cart Trick" term that was already pretty widely established both here and elsewhere as describing the process to follow for some of the Comenity-issued cards that often lead to SP-only approvals.
