still on Amex blacklist after 12 years

Hi all,

I just got rejected instantly when I applied for an Amex Delta skymiles card. Here are my datapoints.

1. No hardpull. Instant denial.

2. I filed bankruptcy in 2009 and included one $10k Amex card at the time. I never paid anything back.

3. I try once every couple of years for an amex card.

4. Ficos in 720s. No baddies on credit reports

5. Credit cards from most prime banks.

To be honest, they didn't even look at any of these datapoints lol. But I am posting them in case people care. I think there is a lot of conflicting info out there about the amex blacklist, and I wanted to post a verified datapoint.

Oof, sorry, OP. Your post inspired me to google "how to get off Amex blacklist," and Amex can certainly hold a grudge. Can someone add you as an AU? That seems to do the trick.

I dont believe you can 100% say they havent looked at your datapoints. Maybe if no sp somewhere but id venture somewhere in their archives they have info on you since you did burn them. Amex has no preset time period to get off a blacklist, only one where if you declared bk and havent included them. Some things can be done to help your cause like actually paying them back though that in itself isnt a gaurentee either. Best thing to do is keep trying ever so often. It could be tomorrow, 6 months or 10 years, hopefully you can break in once more

The Blacklist is legendary and can be long. I was on it for many years. The upside is they didn't do a HP and then deny you.

I'm sure I read somewhere here AMEX will not allow an AU currently on the so-called (but not acknowledged by AMEX) Blacklist.

Just did a shallow dive into the literature, and it appears that blacklisted debtors have a better chance of getting approved as an AU if they pay their Amex debts (and wait 30 days from payment to apply as an AU). For $10k, I'm not sure it's worth it for OP.

Thanks for the comments! I really don't need another credit card (I have over 100k of available credit). I just wanted to get more Delta miles since I have to travel more now for work.

Anyway, my membership on the blacklist is twelve years and counting lol.

I seem to recall reading several different threads here the average blacklist reported is something like 5.5 years which was in fact the case for me as well.

I burned them for just over $10k so I'm not sure what the sticking point they have with your particular account

I am a little over five years bk7 and got 4 Amex cards as of now all in the last 6 months and amex was included in my bk

How much was AMEX burned for? Apparently that makes a HUGE difference.

@Rogue46 There are many people who have longer blacklist periods. 5.5 years is an average. I got my paper reason in the mail and it said I was rejected because Amex had "closed one of my accounts".

@Jccflat you posted on this thread how you have multiple AMEX cards after including them in a bankruptcy, that is really not relevant to me since I have no idea what your data points are.

In any case, I posted this thread to be helpful to those who are on the blacklist longer like me.

I really am not upset about not having AMEX cards. I will accrue miles with my second Discover card, which gives miles as rewards. I might change one of my Capital One cards to a mileage card too if I continue to travel for work.

In any case, for those that got cards quickly after bk'ing AMEX enjoy your cards!

I think you have me confused with someone else, I am definitely on AMEX's bad boy list and don't expect to be approved for a personal AMEX any time soon, if ever. That said, I just changed jobs and will be doing lots of traveling, and my company issues AMEX Corporate cards, so I may end up with an AMEX, but it certainly won't be "mine".

I know that when I applied for a Corporate AMEX card they still asked for my social security number. This was before I was blacklisted so I received the card. I didn't have any reason not to at the time. But I do know people personally who have been rejected. It has to be signed off on at a much higher level if you are blacklisted. It is possible to get one, but more difficult.

You can prequalify for cards even if you're on the blacklist. It's not until you actually apply and the system checks it's database that you'll be declined.

Sorry to hear you about your denial. I was young, immature and lack credit knowledge. I got my cards (two) both revolvers. Stop paying them in 2010. I filed BK7 in 2014, Amex was included for a few thousands. I applied a once maybe twice - as the years passed... immediately denied citing previous account default or something that affect. Checking pre approval site always said, "NOPE!"

Until earlier this year, I checked preapproval and to my amazement, it said I qualified for Gold and Platinum. I was a non believer, figured it was wrong... fake news! Late night April I decided to pull the trigger -

@Jccflat Are your Amex cards revolvers and "your" cards? Curious if you have the $1K limits on any revolvers?
