Capital One Credit Limit Increase

When does Capital One initiate a CLI? Is it automatic after my 6th on time payment? Is there any benefit for waiting for them to do it automatically vs. me initiating a request myself? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

If this is the Credit Steps increase, you can go ahead and request one before that. Capital One requires six months between CLIs when they're requested by the consumer. If it's a CLI that they initiate, the six months thing doesn't apply.

Thank you for the reply. Do they usually have a timeframe for when they initiate it? Just trying to decide if I should request one or if I should wait for an automatic increase. I heard that if I initiate it, I will have a hard credit pull, but if they initiate it its a soft pull.

It's not a hard pull, I asked for a credit limit increase like 5 times and they were all soft pulls each time they told me no 🤣

Capital One wants you to wear down the magstripe to the nub, report a balance then PIF before they even consider giving a CLI. What some would consider cowboy behavior Cap One sees as par for the course. Its usually easier to apply for additional card in the future for larger CL. Wasnt always the case. There are stories told by our forefathers that Cap One used to be CLI friendly. 🤣

I have two Cap1 cards that are over 10 years old and they go about 2 years between Auto CLIs.

Well I decided to go ahead and apply on my own for the CLI. I got a document online that says my Capital One account is too new, but it is definitely over 6 months old, so I'm really confused. Can I still try again in a week or so?

So Capital One always uses a soft pull (EQ I believe) report that's 2 months old; so trying again in a week as mentioned above will yield the same result. I'd wait a few more months before trying again.

True and I stopped asking. They can give me an auto increase if they feel like it. That's one bank I don't expect to grow with in 2022 while I garden 😆

Me too. I posted yesterday that I'm just going to consider my Cap1 cards bucketed, and not bother asking for CLIs any more. Less room for disappointment that way! If they feel like tossing me a CLI automatically, great, I'll take it, but otherwise....forget about it.

Still waiting on my CLI on my Platinum I applied for back in February... it did PC to a Quicksilver card.... but still no love in the CLI dept... ah well. Hope your luck works out better.

God, aint that the truth. I had a card with a $1000 limit that i was running about $20,000 a month thru and tool about a 2 years and they finally bumped it to $1800 after about 20 requests.

but for some reason when they took over williams sonoma they took my $2,500 limit to $8,000 without me even asking, and i've maybe spent $100 on that card over the past 3 years since I obtained it

Kind of like the old saying love finds you, you can't hunt for it. Cap One can be a lot like that. Over the years it seems most of my greatest and surprising CLIs came when I wasn't looking for them. Sometimes credit just finds us, especially if we're behaving ourselves. There was a time when Cap One was more predicatable, that's for sure.
