Amex CLI request Denied - Your Account is Cancelled!

So my DW opened her Hilton Honors Amex June 2021 and was given a $10,000 SL which she has used extensively ever since. We decided to request a 3x CLI this evening online and instantly was given the 7-14 days notice of a decision but then found a secure message on her account dated with today's date saying it was denied and the reasons: "Your account is canceled and no action can be taken unless it is reinstated"

The only thing we can think of is that she was an authorized user on her Mother's Amex and her mother recently went into a nursing home so in about August 2021 they chose to close that account.

So does that mean that we can never get a credit line increase because of that, doesn't seem to make sense?

It makes no sense at all. She needs to get on the horn with Amex and straighten it out.

No, an account she was merely an AU on shouldn't have any bearing on her own personal Amex. I would pull up all 3 reports on annualcreditreport.com right away and go over them with a fine tooth comb. Perhaps something spooked them in DW's file. And of course call Amex and try to get more info.

Was your DW included in your 2019 CH7 BK filing? If so that may have slipped through the cracks when Amex approved her back in June and they just now caught it and closed the account. If not and assuming she's PIF every month and not carrying a huge balance over every month. Then it sounds like something in her credit profile brought it on. When you have cards with Amex they run your credit every month and not only monitor your payments, usage and credit seeking profile with them but others as well. For sure she needs to reach out to them.

So my DW called Amex this morning turns out they are referring to her Amex that was included in her BK7 from 2001. With that, I guess we are lucky they gave us this one. I recall that I actually received the pre-approval and we just used that code for her application maybe this is a loophole. They sad they are going to investigate it hope they don't close this one on us.

I'm pretty sure that's a no-no. Offers I've seen usually have a disclaimer stating something like "this offer is non-transferable" or "only valid for the addressee" or similar. It may have slipped through their initial approval process, but perhaps caught up with you now.

Referrals can be exchanged between family and/or friends (as long as it's not a self-referral). If an AENB customer has a referral offer on their account, they can generate the referral invite to anyone they choose. The recipient would then receive the offer via email, for example, and they in turn can apply for their own account with said referral code.

I'm not sure if you are confusing the above with direct or targeted offer to a specific individual. In that specific situation, only the individual identified with the offer would be the eligible recipient.

But, it's unlikely that the OP's or DW's [referral] actions triggered the AA.

Perhaps the OP can clarify whether a referral of some sort was used or if DW used a pre-approved offer or mailer that he received. Since additional details were later shared about DWs 2001 BK with AENB IIB.

@oorhett, was the pre-approved offer you mentioned on post #6 a mailer under your name and decided to switch it with DW's information? Was the pre-approved offer online, and whose account was used for the offer? Or, did you send DW an offer code from your account?

I took the OP's comment at face value, i.e., "I recall that I actually received the pre-approval and we just used that code for her application..." I saw nothing about a referral, and I can't imagine pre-approvals being transferable. OP? Clarify, please?!

I am a little bit confused, how were you getting pre-approval in 2021 if your BK was discharged in 2019?

I thought it was 5 years (and however many months) after discharge that application could be considered

Was this something you received in the mail, like preselected offer?

Yep I got an offer in the mail told my wife and I used it to apply for the card in her name, in fact, when we went to use the Hilton points from it took us a while to figure out the Hilton points were attached to my Hilton membership and not hers but we got that sorted out. Been using the card ever since without any issues and still using it today. It's just when we requested a 3x CLI that this AA came up. BTW they pulled her Experian when she originally applied in June 2021. Her BK being so long ago I didn't even think of it until she called Amex this morning to figure things out and they told her that was the reason. The latest is they were going to investigate and let her know in a few days on the CLI. We think the Delta Skymiles card she IIB had about $5-$10K on it.

I filed not my wife in 2019 I also have never had an AMEX, but yeah as I remember it was a pre-approval letter for Hilton Honors AMEX to me.

So, just to be clear on the sequence of events, the pre-approved offer was/arrived in your name, but you used your wife's information instead? 😬 All offers clearly state they're non-transferable, though. So, this wasn't a referral from your account? I was under the impression (until you clarified in the above comments), that she had applied on her own accord (with her own referral or invitation from your account). Using someone else's info is definitely not something that's recommended (per the fine print). Which explains why the Hilton Honors account points were initially set up under your name and not hers.

So, is the account still restricted or was it reinstated?

Is there an echo in here? I could've sworn that's what I said to begin with! Considering the OP said that *he* received a pre-approved offer, but his *wife* used it to apply, with no mention of a referral code, I was pretty sure that was a no-no.

We haven't received any notifications that they have completed their investigation so as of now we are still at the original CL of 10K and still using the card without issue.
