For over a month or so I kept getting credit card pre-approvals in the mail from fnbo. So, finally I bit and applied online for their evergreen card. I got an email saying they'd let me know in 7 to 10 days if I was approved. WHAT? Previously I got two AMEX cards and a BofA card with nice credit lines of 15k and 9k in a 30 second response online!

After about a week I called and told them to just cancel my application. Two days later I get a letter in the mail from them asking for my last two W-2's, and some other stuff I wasn't about to send in order for them to "consider" me for their card. NEVER has a credit card company asked me for copies of my W-2s for a card - you'd think I was applying for a mortgage! I'm thinking the letter was already enroute when I called to cancel my application, but they couldn't pay me to have their card.

My credit scores are 744, 756 and 764 and have NO late pays on any of the cards as long as I've had them. I closed two Cap1 cards because they wanted me to apply for a CLI instead of giving me one like my other cards after I'd had their cards since 2017 - no thank you.

Has anyone ever heard of such nonsense?

No, I've never been asked for such proof either--not for a credit card!--but these days, banks seem to ask for all kinds of information they didn't in the past. With all the fraud and everything going on, I think they're just covering all their bases.

If you're upset/offended by their request, move on! Wave to them in your rearview mirror and don't look back. There are plenty of other banks out there, with great cards, and they'd probably be happy to have you as a customer. So try one of them!

They didn't seem to care that on my 2019 taxes I made 1/3 of my stated income (had a baby) and they didn't care that I made 2/3 of my stated income in 2020 (Covid furlough).

Most all credit issuers always reserve the right to ask for POI and more and more credit card issuers are doing. Cool thing is you also have the right to not apply for their cards and services.

FNBO is a small bank and they still do manual underwriting, I don't believe anyone is getting an instant approval for their products. Also they've had more than average applications, since people heard about them on the internet.

Sounds to me like you had mailers up the whazoo and still cold apped. Not that good of a process. I know I first started with cards from local powerhouse banks that knew me or quickly got to know me in branch. After that my bank cheering section expanded because the local banks would vouch for me to the non-local banks. The non-local banks would take a chance and then also vouch for me after I treat them well. Now my reports are littered with banks and CUs all tripping over each other to say that I am their customer instead of requiring verification.
