@RobynJ wrote:

I've always wondered why Cap1's algorithm is designed to not reward their card members with CLI conducive to their Credit Profile and usage. I read all the time about how stingy they are with CLI but on the other end of the spectrum give cards to more undesirable candidates. I get the way the subprime market works but you would think that they would love to have those that passed the threshold into a better credit arena to want to keep that card and better their portfolio. I am just disgruntled that they treat you as a high risk even after you have proven you are not and your FICO now backs that with more factual evidence. My opinion is that "we" I want to feel accomplished by the reward of the earned CLI because it doesn't happen the way I desire it sort of makes me feel as if I am still a subprime risk rather than a revenue asset to them. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, their business model is quite complex, but if you navigate to post #11 and access the link, there's part of the answer. This type of business model has worked for them for over a couple of decades so it's not going to deviate much. Also, not every customer falls into the same credit profile or criteria, some of us have farily high limits with Capital One, including folks who have upwards of $20K, $30K, $50K (or much higher). Mine is $160,000. And, if you search around in the Approvals section, some members have been approved for the Venture X CC with some pretty decent limits + CLIs as well.

Hello All!

This is long...sorry. About 2 1/2 yeara ago i had a 600 credit score and a chargeoff. I cleaned up my credit, got a capital one card and a credit one card. the limits were like $500 each. I used them and over time got auto increases. always paying the balance off monthly. Capital One contacted me and offered to "upgrade" me top the Quicksilver card. I did. they kept giving me reguluar CLIs. They sent me another offer to conver to a Savor One card..I declined. Fast forward. I now have a 802 credit score and my last cars, Apple is at $15,300 CL, SoFi $10,500 CL, Amex Blue $1,000 CL. My Cap One Quicksilver is at $2500, bt has been stalled for about a year. They keep denying the CLI request because "Recent use of this account's existing credit line has been too low.". So last month I ran it up to the limit, then paid it in full before the end of the statement. Applied for a CLI and got the same thing. So I did the same thing this month. Expecting the same result. My APR is %25.24 which is insane. I asked them to lower it..denied. On th flip side, my Apple is %14...I think my So-Fi is %13 and I got a pre-approval from nasafcu at %10. So should I keep doing this and see if they gve me a CLI? Should I apply for a new Cap 1 card and close this one? Should I just look at different CCs altogether?

welcome and sorry to hear about the stalled CL on the Cap1

i would keep it open as it is your oldest card

the best chance of you getting a CLI is to use it repeatedly for 3 -4 months - use the entire limit - make multiple payments - rinse and repeat

then ask for a CLI

this process may or may not work, as some cards do just get Stuck at a certain CL

but if you really want to grow it, then this is the path to try

if it doesn't work, keep using the card every 6 months so that it has some activity - but focus on your other cards and other limits, as it may just never grow

good luck to you !

They were the first lender to give me a $2K limit during my rebuild. I got another $500 from them and that's it. I ask for a CLI when I think about it but I expect nothing more from the account. I keep it around because it's one of my oldest cards and it has no FTF or AF.

I wouldn't close a card that's not costing me anything to keep.

If I got to the point where I had so many cards they were difficult to manage and I was trying to thin the herd, I might consider it then, but I'm nowhere near that point yet.

@DaWhole9 wrote:

They sent me another offer to conver to a Savor One card..I declined.

I would love to be able to product change my Quicksilver to a Savor One. I have several cards that give me 2% back on everything. So the 1.5% from the QS isn't really helpful. The S1 is something I could use but don't really want to add an inquiry and new account to get it.

My Venture One has been stuck at its current limit for almost 4 years. Even when I was using it frequently (it was my only travel card for a while), it didn't grow any more than where it is - which is only that high from account combinations.

I've moved on from Cap One. I refuse to close the card because of the history and length of time it's been open, but it is sock drawered. It gets one purchase every 6-12 months, and that's it. If they ever decide to close it, I won't be upset.

My suggestion is if you can obtain something that better suits your needs, apply and move on. Between the lack of growth and triple pulls for new credit, I think you can do better than Cap One.

Just move on if they aren't meeting your needs or wants.

I must be bucketed and im not sure if i want to continue to try with this one. Started at $500, went up to about $1000 and they converted me to Quicksilver and now its $2500. In about 2 years. Perfect payment history. My credit score was 690ish at first now 800ish. I was putting about $300 a month on the card and paying in full wach month. 3 months ago I started putting 2300-2500 on it and paying in full. Still get the denial that say my usage for the card is too low. I now have a few cards over $10000 in CLIs and others I wanna grow like AMEX and Discover. Should i just call it quitson trying to work with Cap 1? I have called and all they say is "well the system will approve you when you meet the criteria.". They did say the CLI system may be a few months behind in showing usage. So maybe 4-6 months of high activity MIGHT make a difference. Ideas?

@DaWhole9 wrote:

Ideas?

It sounds like this particular account is in a tranche of some sort.

Since you've been recently approved for X1 + 3 other cards in the past few months, the question will be how much effort are you willing to put into seeing whether it will grow from it's current limit vs devoting your spend on the other accounts. Personally, unless you have a lot of disposable income where you can throw $$$ to this particular card with any organic spend, then I don't see it growing beyond where it is for a while. Especially, if you've already placed a considerable amount in the past 3 months and it didn't. Your decision, though.

Thoughts?

I always thought Cap1 was a good bank, a prime card bank, based on its commercials and other advertising. Only after I got some of their cards did I start wondering if they're more of a sub-prime kind of bank. I know they offer secured cards and ultra-low-limit cards and everything, but so do great banks like BofA.

My two Quicksilvers are about 10 years old, my Walmart Rewards MC a few years younger, and NONE has had a CLI in ages. Every attempt, like clockwork, is met with an instantaneous denial, followed by a letter with some silly 'reason' that usually has nothing to do with me. As I've said many times, I'm stuck at $4,000 on one QS, $4,500 on the other QS, and $10,000 on the WMR. I no longer have any expectations of getting CLIs on any of them, so I'm not going to bother asking. That way I can spare myself the annoying denial...

As one of the largest CCC out there you would think that after you reach a certain threshold they would want to transition you to a more accommodating relationship. That may mean asking you to transition to another product if necessary but again I would think it should be initiated on their behalf. If they were to analyze the way customers reacted using that approach I would bet my paycheck that their retention rate and new business would soar much more drastically then how it seems to flutter now. Again this is just my perception but at the end of the day they can only remain in business if we give them business and from the posts here in My Fico I would ascertain their retention rate is more than likely declining.

I never had a sub-prime card, secured card, or any such. So I assumed it was just another prime card issuer--I mean, I'd seen its ads for years and they certainly gave that impression! Their ads practically imply they're as good and prestigious as Amex (and now just wait for the argument to start as to why I said Amex is prestigious....). I really didn't know for sure until becoming active on this forum that Cap1 has a strong share of the sub-prime market.

I've been TALKING forever about closing my two QS cards...but have yet to actually *do* it.

My cap one quicksilver was originally 3500. I actually used that card to pay off a charge off I had with cap one from about 5 years ago. Put 2700 on in as soon as it arrived. Paid 2k right away then ran it to 2k balance.

I regularly paid it down but never off. Left about 20% usage on it. Then received an auto CLI after less then 6 months.

my fiancé snagged the platinum card. $300 SL. She uses it in full then pays in full. They keep denying her CLI. I think they prefer to see some usage there then keep a decent untilization percentage going
