topic Back in with AmericanExpress! in Credit Card Applications

Tonight while checking out various credit health, I decided on a whim to see what American Express thought of me... every month or so for the last 5 years, I apply and get an instant denial for previous history.

Every time it has resulted in ZERO credit pulls.

The previous history they speak of was a $1,300 bill I defaulted in November 2010... my business failed in 2009, I held on as long as I could doing odd jobs but didn't find meaningful employment until 2015 (by meaningful, I mean being able to pay rent, utilities, gas AND food with anything left over).

So back to tonight's excitement... I applied for a Hilton Honors card, the wheel spun, and spun, and spun... I was thinking this is different... then I started getting notifications of a HP! Ultimately it was denied for age of youngest account (Thank you Web bank / Fingerhut Fetti -- a card I didn't ask for, but failed to see it was changing until it already had).

To see if I was truly off the black list, I had my wife try and add me to one of her cards again (always denied in the past, with a message I needed to call them -- past history)... tonight she entered all of my information including the requested SSN.... instant "Your new card will arrive in 2-4 business days, thank you."

To some, this might not seem like much... to me, it's a signal that I have done well enough on my rebuild that AmEx has either overlooked my past with them or forgotten.

So, for me it seems 11.5 years was the length of their memory. The debt was never repayed, and to be honest I'm not sure I want to bring it to their attention now that I'm no longer black listed (even though they were on my list of banks to repay this year).

While I'm excited, this post was more for data points incase of a potential trend of American Express shortening the length people spend on their black-list.

(While it may not be pertinent, this month was my One (1) year anniversary with CreditOne American Express card... again only provided as a potential DP).

I found out this month that my BK7 from 2011 that burned Amex no longer mattered to them (I never repaid the amount from the BK) . I got the BCP with a 15k starting CLI. Sounds like Amex is relaxing some of their blacklist requirements
