Apple card app denied, unable to verify identity

I was ordering a new iPad Air last night from the Apple store and "just for science" I figured I'd try for the Apple card since I know it's SP to get the offer and I can refuse it to avoid an HP/new account.

I temporarily unfroze TU 30 minutes before making the attempt. After filling in the info, it asked me to upload my DL. Strange, especially since it only asked for the last 4 digits of my SSN, but ok, I did it. It also sent a text to my phone, to which I responded. The app went to review.

This morning I received an email: "Thanks for your interest in Apple Card. Goldman Sachs Bank USA has reviewed your application, and it was not approved at this time because...We are unable to verify your identification information"

Since I wasn't going to accept the card anyway, I won't bother making another attempt or calling. I wonder if it's because they didn't provide a field to put a middle name/initial in, and I didn't provide one. Or maybe I have to unfreeze more than just TU.

I guess it keeps my gardening status safe anyway.

Could be for sure as some times, kinda of a lot of the time they double SP on new apps, TU and EXP

Chex isn't froozen. Just EX, EQ and (I think) Innovus.

I would have unfrozen all 3 majors if I actually wanted the card.

I wonder if it's because (a) they didn't have a middle initial field, so the name I provided didn't match exactly to what the TU pull would have given, and (b) my DL has my full middle name, which also wouldn't match what I entered or what is on TU.

I'd try again for science, but I've done enough credit sciencing for one day/week.

Yeah they also run a full Sagestream and Chex for Approval and also every month or so as maintenance

I figured I'd try again with my first name + middle initial in the first name field. After spinning, it wanted me to upload my DL again, so I withdrew at that point.

No point fighting with this when I don't even intend on accepting the card if approved. So, experiment over. I never had this issue with Chase.

I wonder what other banks do prequals with TU. I could try a couple while it's still unfrooze.

The middle initial makes no difference. When I applied and was subsequently approved, I went through the verification process with uploading DL and whatnot. That being said, I had none of the CRAs frozen including secondary ones. So, I'm willing to bet it's likely anything they couldn't get access to.

Since your experiment is over, I simply wanted to point out that the middle initial (or absence thereof) is not the culprit unless your identity has an alias or complex name that may pose an issue when verifying things.

@CreditMarathoner You should try the GM by marcus perosnal card - it is the same type of sitation as apple card and see if that also has trouble verifying you

That's a Goldman Sachs card as well, right? I'd probably have the exact same issues as with the Apple card.

It's all moot now anyway because it's 9/1 and my TU should be frozen again.

Think about pulling a copy of your Lexis Nexis consumer report (did you lock that?) to perform a sanity check. They do occasionally cross-pollenate a report, especially if there are aliases involved, with someone else's identifying information even when relevant secondary information like age and state of residence don't exactly line up.

Thanks, just ordered a copy. I don't have it locked/frozen, if I do, will it affect anything besides getting credit? Like switching insurance companies? I'm about to switch my auto and home insurance.

Here's a DP I can share on the Apple Card

I tried applying for the Apple Card 3 times on my Android Phone and Windows Desktop. All were denied for being unable to verify my identity. Then I tried applying from my New Iphone 13 Pro, instantly approved.

I have a feeling Goldman Sachs is favoring applications applied from an Apple Device.

If you haven't tried this, I would give it a shot.

Interesting. Seems to be an odd criteria. I don't have my iPad yet (supposed to ship next week) so I can't try yet; besides, my credit is frozen again. Maybe if I get the urge in the future I can unfreeze all 3 bureaus and give it a try from the iDevice.

I probably won't though... I don't want or need the card, so why go through the trouble just to see what limit/APR I would be declining.

I tried 3 times, from android, pc, and iphone. Got the same message after uploading my drivers license. Gave up as it was too much hassle and I have cards that are probably better than the Apple Card.

Just catching up in this thread, sorry for the late response. The short answer is yes, but you can freeze it and then thaw it later if needed although the response may not be as granular as with the CRAs (put another way don't necessarily expect a thaw request to be executed within 60 minutes)

Some people freeze it because they don't want to bother to (or don't realize that they can) dispute off or correct bogus information much like one can with a credit report but that can backfire later if they have a need to thaw it.

I personally think the whole world is just upside down.

My own bank my own bank the one I've been banking with for 18 years can't verify my identity.

I've been to the branch five times.

This is what they made me hand them. Again my own bank.

Registration form of my heart is insurance policy for my card statement in Wells Fargo banking institution, I sent them 7 years of PenFed. My driver's license and my phone bill.

Did I mention I've been with them for 18 years.

I even got the corporate office involved.

I got my Lexis Nexis report, nothing out of the ordinary there. I did email them about my name being on there with the wrong middle initial (due to a phone rep misunderstanding my middle initial while mortgage shopping in 2015), but there are plenty of entries with the correct middle name/initial as well, and the incorrect one never gave me grief anywhere else.

I think it's just GS's identity verification not working properly, or because I had EX, EQ and Innovus frozen at the time (I only unfroze TU).

Maybe some day I'll try again, if it's worth the hassle of unfreezing things for a non-app app.

I never froze any of my credit reports and I put exactly the same name and address that I have on my DL and on my credit reports, yet still Apple couldn't verify my identity despite of being trying 300 times. And I did use all 3 devices, mac computer, my iPhone 13 pro max, and even android phone, yet still I get the same message. I wrote them and they responded with a link to upload my DL which I did at least 300 times but it never got accepted. I gave up. I have been living the same house for 32 years...all my reports have exactly the same address and name. Its just that I am so tired of applying..its not accepting. If you google this subject extensively then you would found thousands of people are having similar issue...and nobody has ever to find out what is the culprit including Apple despite of when this card came along. How many times and for how long people are reporting this issue to Apple, but Apple has done nothing to troubleshoot it...so sad...

Did you try calling Goldman Sachs? You'd think they could figure it out on their end, or at least have a human look at the info and say "yes, you are who you say you are" and push the app through. Otherwise, they'd be losing potential customers. They're the ones issuing the cards and verifying the identities, not Apple.

Did you try calling Goldman Sachs? You'd think they could figure it out on their end, or at least have a human look at the info and say "yes, you are who you say you are" and push the app through. thank you so much for your reply but it seems that you overlooked my above posting; otherwise you would have seen me stating that more than 100s of times I contacted Apple and spoke with suprvisors and their tech dept but nobody was ever be able to resolve this issue in 2 yrs. They all made statements to give this and that reasons and solutions but nothing has ever worked for. They actually dont know either whats wrong and why millions of people are facing exactly this issue...and if you search on google then you would find out that Apple still hasnt resolved this technical issue despite of this issue being reported to them from the get go when this card came out a few years back and millions of people have reported this problem to them but nithing has been done to resolve it.
