Do you have another card with Chase already or a checking? Chase has its own internal credit score system and a pre-existing relationship helps quite a bit on their internal credit score.

Denied AGAIN for a United card. (See previous post here.)

They pulled Experian (735) and Equifax (728). Both have dipped now, so thanks Chase!

I applied for Club as the United Clubs where I travel most frequently (Tokyo) have reopened. I also assumed my credit scores would be enough.

My seven year-old chargeoffs fell off my credit reports by the end of April 2022, thus allowing my credit scores to skyrocket. I also got a CLI on my Navy Federal (only asked for $5k for a total of $15k, should have probably asked for more but I am not greedy) and I opened an AMEX Platinum in June 2022. I have $5k of PayPal credit which I don't use. Nothing else has changed much. Still have a $120k/year job. Still have no missed payments. Still pay everything on time. Credit usage is 18%. I do have student loans, but I have two degrees from a top 20 school and paid OOP for my grad school. That shouldn't be a reason people get denied, but oh well.

I wanted the 100k bonus because United is the only airline I fly. Seems Chase thinks I'm not a good candidate for their cards. I just don't understand.

Are you over 5/24 new accounts? Any charge off's with Chase? They don't care if you went to top 20 school and paid out of pocket as that is figured into DTI if you have huge SL payments. More information would be helpful. Such as charge offs with chat, 5/24 status dti % and other stuff..You can recon depending on answers and might have a fighting chance.

Seems like after reading this (UNLESS you burned Chase as one of those Charge Off's as they have a VERY long memory) and you other post that it's still the student loans and possibly even that deferment of them 7+ years ago still. The amount of them or the payment required or something related seems to have Chase spooked. You mention in both posts and other that, "but you got the degrees from a Top 20 school". Chase couldn't give a rats behind about degrees or where they came from. Matter of fact they don't even know about them or where you went and they don't ask, again because it's irrelevant. It pretty much has zero to do with credit, wealth and/or financial building and responsibility. I know a man here personally, that doesn't even have a GED. Quit school in the 4th grade. Took $500 when he was 18 and just married and started a junk yard business. Today 50 years later he is a Billionaire. One of the richest people in the State. His business over those years evolved into a World Class Demo Company that now has Offices here and in ATL, GA and Dallas,TX and he has 5,500 fulltime employees. Matter of fact his company was the one that had the $100 Million Contract to clean up the World Trade Centers following 9/11. I promise you banks and lenders couldn't care less about his 4th Grade education.

That shouldn't be a reason people get denied, but oh well.

I wanted the 100k bonus because United is the only airline I fly. Seems Chase thinks I'm not a good candidate for their cards. I just don't understand.

Just curious how many points you got from just one CO being removed? I just got one removed from TU last night (waiting eagerly for update) and I have two more that will be ready around September.

@GeorgiaBulldog wrote:

Strange--I have a lower household income than OP and more than double the student loan balance, but I have several Chase cards. Like others, I am curious about the reason for denial. Depending on the reason, despite the last recon efforts not going well, it might still be worth another shot.

If that doesn't pan out, maybe go for a card with another Star Alliance partner as a stopgap until you can get the United Club card? Lufthansa has an all-time high offer, and you can redeem their miles on United Flights.

Also, while folks in this thread have asserted that banks don't care about your education, I distinctly remember Discover asking what your highest level of education is on their application. I can't remember any other banks doing that, but there is at least one.

It isn't that they don't care about education, it's that the automated algorithms aren't impressed by where that level of education was achieved. They don't particularly care if you got your degree from an Ivy League school or from State U.

Off the top of my head my guess is that Chase issue with OP is tied to DTI concerns combined with limited experience with $15K+ CL cards. The United Club card historically has had a mininum SL of $15K.

Sorry, I still can't figure out how to quote posts here. I don't see the option.

Anyway, if you see my previous thread, the denial last time was because a charge off that was supposed to be off wasn't on Chase's end. They told me to wait 6+ months and to try again. So, I did. In that time, my credit score rose significantly. I am just frustrated and not interested in pleading my case again just to be told "sorry but no." It seems recon works maybe 20% of the time.

And to the person saying my low credit limit on a card ($15k) is probably blocking me — well, that's all I could get for a while as I rebuilt my credit and waited for the charge offs to go away. I do also have the $5k PayPal credit and the AMEX card. I'm doing the best I can. (Sorry, the attitude here always comes off as a bit elitist when people are just asking for help. Sorry I don't have 45 credit cards??)
