Denied Citi Custom Cash

I just did a thaw on my credit reports to open up a couple new credit cards.

two days ago got approved for Cap1 Savor One for $10K cl. Wanted the Citi Custom Cash and got denied today. I currently have a Citi Double Cash card that I've had for 8 years with a $23K cl. My balance on that card is $2K so it's low utilization. I have four other cards (CSP, Freedom and a CU with high limits with zero balances and my recently approved SavorOne card. AAoA is 17 years. Fico score is over 800 and I had 1 inquiry prior to denial.

I'm wondering if applying for two cards within a couple days did me in? Seems odd since I haven't applied for any credit in four years. Any thoughts?

Update: I contacted Citi and their automated application system told me the reason for denial was "Too Many Recent Credit Inquiries". I only have ONE inquiry prior to denial albeit that one inquiry was two days prior. I have never attempted to recon but I wonder what my chances are?

well after finally getting a hold of a live person at recon it was confirmed that having a inquiry within 7 days prior and opening a new account was the reason for denial. He said wait 10 days and reapply. He said within 30 days wouldn't "Necessarily" be a additional hard pull whatever that means.

See what I did was start two credit apps at the same time on two different browser tabs then submit them at the same time...I got my FNBO Evergreen and my first Citi Custom Cash at the same time doing it that way. Not saying that's how you should get around dumb rules but it worked out for me.

Last December, I applied for the Custom Cash a couple days after I applied for a Max Cash Preferred. But I was being strategic, and knew that Citi wasn't going to see my earlier app because Citi and Elan pull from different bureaus in my state. Also worked fine. No AA after the 2 cards reported, and in fact Citi gave me a large (50%) CLI a few months later.

They probably mean that they use the same hard pull for the following 30 days. I don't know if anyone else can confirm on that but that is what it sounds like. I think you're best bet is waiting however long they told you too (maybe a day or two more) and then reapply, if what they say is true, at least the new account won't be the decline reason and hopefully you'll be approved then. @Fastphilly I was able to product change my Double Cash to Custom Cash. Call Citi and see what they say.

I, too, got denied for a Citi Custom Cash late last year, and I had to send in tax documents, to boot. They did two hard pulls just days apart. I was not happy about that, as I didn't know they would do a second one.

I am hoping to get one next year, since I am not applying for any new cards for at least 12 months. I may wait 15 months or longer for a new card. Hopefully, you'll get approved for one later this or next year.

I applied for the Custom Cash card and was told to wait 7-10 business days. I got a letter in the mail stating my application was denied yet they still sent the card which i activated and am presently using.

You can only apply for one Citi personal card every 8 days, you can apply for no more than two Citi personal cards every 65 days and you can apply for one Citi business card every 95 days.
