Will I be approved? Am I blacklisted?

My latest credit report says I have 27 open accounts with a total credit limit a little under $500k and utilization of about 3%.I currently have an 850 FICO 8 and 837 FICO 9.

I am planning to apply for the Capital One Venture card next month for the signing bonus. I had the Venture card together with two other Capital One personal cards and the Business Spark Miles Card previously however all of them got closed six years ago in 2017 by Capital One.

This is the story. I had three longstanding Capital One personal cards and one business card and wanted to apply for the Spark Business card for the $500 bonus at the time. I mistakenly applied online while on vacation back in my home country, which I discovered is categorized a "high fraud country". I believe the IP was flagged in the application.

Instead of the standard automatic approval, I got the "we are reviewing your application and you will hear from us a couple of weeks". Two days later all my capital one cards were blocked and when I called, I was told I needed to verify my identity. When I returned to the United States, they asked me to send in a copy of my Social Security card and my drivers license through a secure message.

I did that and their response was I am not the person I say I am, and that my Social Security card had been doctored. 🤔🤔🤔 I happen to have a slight misspelling in my first name on my Social Security card that I have never bothered to fix so there's a slight difference between my Social Security card and my drivers license, which matches my passport.

Fortunately, there was a Capital One branch a couple of miles away from my house so I walked into the bank, requested a manager and told him the situation. I took along my social security card, driver license, US passport and all of my identification together. We called Capital One card services, and he verified to them that he had checked all my IDs and I am the person I say I am. They said I would hear back from them in a couple of weeks.

A few days later, one of my Capital One cards was unblocked. Instead of keeping quiet about it, I called them and requested that the other cards should be unblocked. The customer service personnel I spoke to checked the records and said that card had been unblocked by mistake and promptly blocked all the cards again, this time permanently. I wrote a letter to including to the CEO 😂 in protest to no avail, so I currently do not have a single Capital One card.

About three years ago, I applied for a Capital One card (I think the Venture) with a score in the lower 800's and got denied because they said the balance on one of my cards was too high. I had a balance of about $29k on one card which had a credit limit of $35k. My total credit limit was a around $400k. I didn't get approved for a lower tier card. I called for reconsideration, but couldn't convince them.

Whenever I use the pre-qualification tool on Capital One I only get preapproved for the lower cards, namely Quicksilver and SavorOne which I have no interest in, but never for the Venture and other "higher" cards. Does that mean I don't qualify for them?

Secondly, have I perhaps been blacklisted by Capital One? I doubt because I do get preapproved for the lower tier cards. Of course I can find out by simply applying however I don't want to apply and get the hit on my credit only to get denied.

Finally, I called Capital One this morning and according to them, I have records of only one closed card (it is not the venture card) in their system, not four. If I do get approved for the Venture card, will I be eligible for the bonus a second time particularly since they say they do not have records of it in their system?

Just because a CSR can't find a record of you ever having held a Venture previously that doesn't mean that they've forgotten about you organizationally. If it were me I wouldn't apply with confidence that I would be able to collect a 2nd SUB if approved.

Never knew about this data point specific pre approval. I checked and I am. I had checked earlier today using the general preapproval one and only got the Quicksilver and SavorOne.

I guess my last question is, does a person only get the bonus once? Because although prequalified for the Venture X, I don't want to pay the $395 fee. This pre approval said I am also prequalified for the VentureOne but didn't show the regular Venture. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.

With your great scores and profile, if I were you I really wouldn't bother with Capital One. To my mind they are a low class outfit, and there are many better lenders out there to deal with.

I had an experience with them 3 or 4 years ago where they closed both my personal account and business account, each of which had been managed perfectly, and would never tell me the reason. At the time my credit scores were in the high 700's and my utilization was running at around 3%.

I just tried applying for a Capital Checking account. After going through the steps online, it said I needed to call. I called, they went through identity verification with me, and then I got the message they cannot approve me.

Clearly I am blacklisted by Capital One and the only reason must be what they said years ago, they do not believe I am the person I say I am. Unbelievable how an algorithm trumps commonsense. If the algorigthm says I am a not who I am, the fact that I appeared in person at their branch with all my identification doesn't matter. The algorithm is ALWAYS right!

I got approved for the Capital One Spark Business last week, 6 years after Capital One shut down all my 3 credit cards and accused me of "not being who I say I am, basically fraud". I cannot tell if I was on a blacklist becasue I applied in 2019 and 2021 with scredit scores near 800 but was denied both times. At the time I did carry about $25k on a credit card although my total available balance was around $400k.

Here is more Capital One signing bonuses in my future. Will hit on the Venture X sometime later next year.

I am new here so you don't have to listen to me and I could be very wrong - but I would still be very worried your new Business Card from Cap1 could be closed at anytime. Remember something in their algorithms a few years ago reopened 1 of your cards by mistake and even just a few months ago you couldn't even open a Cap1 checking account.

So congrats on getting approved for Sparks but if I were you don't be surprised if this account gets closed sooner rather than later. I hope it doesn't of course but just my opinion.

I'd have to agree with @SouthJamaica concerning capital one, With your profile why are you bothering with them when there are so many better lenders? I picked up my 2 CapOne cards when nobody else would touch me but now I'm in a better place I have really no use for them..

I don't actually blame you for wanting to get a Venture X or other Capital One cards. They now have some benefits that make the experience worth it.

If you have issues again then I'm wondering if you might have more success filling with the CFPB than through the bank, although getting your identity verified might be outside of their wheelhouse.

you should know by now capital one doesn't like PIF or prime customers LOL

furthermore, you need to have that error on the spelling fixed asap. imagine traveling.. or dealing with something else related and that causing an issue. man what a nightmare. Best wishes

I agree with @Rogue46 @SouthJamaica

Capital One has some decent starter cards but the higher end cards are meh compared to others not worth much beyond the sub.

The fact they also always triple pull the CRAs and the nonsense around getting CLIs to me is not worth it.
