New to nfcu, looking for all advice

As I posted elsewhere, I just joined nfcu. I'd like to apply for flagship card, any advice?

Do they always pull tu?

Do they approve new members?

How's your credit? I love NFCU great rate on my car, I got a secured card in fear of denial... within 60 days I got a 2k limit increase on the secured card but didn't graduate yet. CS rep told me to call back after 90-120 days and they'll look at it.

If this is your try with them I wouldn't go for the flagship .

I forget your profile, but even if you are a nice, think, aged profile, I'd get money + direct deposit going if you wanted to very quickly app the flagship, I have a feeling flagship has underwriting more stringent than the limit provided

ie. they would approve you right away for $25k cash rewards, but may not approve you for the same $25k flagship

but yes, always a TU hardpull, they have a pre-qualify tool, but it's borderline worthless

people who don't prequalify can be approved and people who do prequalify can be denied, I've been able to personally gimmick the pre-qualify tool by moving money from a money market savings to the share savings and change the result despite the amount of money in NFCU remaining exactly the same

@GZG This is what I'm doing. Just building my relationship with NFCU by adding to my savings, direct deposits to checking, and faithfully adding $25 (my budget) to my CD every week while I work on my credit. Hopefully in a few months my internal Navy score will grow while my FICO score grows and I'll feel confident to app for the More Rewards card.

Lots of good points here. It does happen on occasion but first timers getting approved for the Flagship are few and far between, that's why so many here recommend against it.

I have very little money with them, and no DD, but they've still been generous with CLIs every time I've bothered to ask, as well as given multiple loan approvals. YEMV

Thanks, everyone. I think my tu fico9 is about 800. My income is $63K, my dti 3%. I'm going to check my tu report, see exactly where I am on inquiries, tu is my worst.

I'm not much interested in their other cards, I gather flagship may be the most selective.

I'm planning to move a Dd there. I'll read the threads listed.

I'm one of the rare I suppose cases of getting the Flagship card first then latter the More Rewards. I still have a bk7 showing from 2015 and joined them about this time last year. Started with just the Flagship checking and having mine a DW's payroll deposited in it. Two weeks latter opened 3 CD's and then about 2 or 3 weeks after that approximately I went for it and got approved for the Flagship with around a $30k SL. Wasn't long after that maybe 2 months or so we got 2 used auto loans from them and then also the More Rewards with a high SL.

All in all they have been great and have become our main bank even though we have accounts at Chase and Wells Fargo

Things have changed and In the current lending environment the Flag Ship should not be your first attempt. I have 3 cards with Navy and several CLI approved on the first go

Use there products

Make consistent deposits to savings

Get s pledge loan

Start an Easy Certificate

In 90 days your internal score will be good enough to give it ago

NFCU is very much a relationship bank and establishing DD (even if it's only a portion of paycheck) and using their CDs and Savings will help your internal score. They're super good on the moreRewards and cashRewards SLs, as I had only been an AU and they gave me a nearly $30k SL (TU HP). But, YMMV for the Flagship.

I'd wait until you get an NFCU mobile app invitation or a snaiil mail invite.

I opened up a new savings account 3 months ago and the first month I was initially invited to app for their secured NFCU card but I ignored it, then next month AMEX NFCU card was pre-selected which I ignored (already have 3 AMEX products), and recently, received a Cash Rewards invite in the mail as "pre-approved".

I took the $20K Cash Rewards card for a BT I wanted.

They do have an internal scoring system to determine credit worthiness which really threw me off:

Maybe later, as I get more experience with NFCU, I will wait for the Flagship card.
