topic When is a good time to apply after paying off a carried balance? in Credit Card Applications

So due to exceptional circumstances I had to continue to hold a balance on a credit card after the 0% promo period I was offered. This lowered my fico score, and I'm sure my overall credit profile.

I finally have enough to pay it off and am going to do so shortly. However there are some cards I'm eyeing up and I want to apply for one of them. But I'm wondering when is a good time to apply for them after having carried that balance? Once my Fico score recovers and I get an update about it, does that mean I'm good to go? Or because I carried a balance for a while and had a card almost maxed out will lenders be "spooked" for a while and lower my chances of success?

It shouldn't've affected your score at all: FICO doesn't use your interest rate in calculations and the balance would be the same no matter the interest rate unless it was a store card that added a bunch of retroactive interest when your 0% period ended with a balance outstanding and that really jacked your utilization. Regardless, FICO scores are based on the NOW in the absence of baddies (except 10T, I believe) so once you pay it off and it reports as such, it no longer affects your score. Pay it off, wait one reporting cycle to make sure it gets factored and you should be good to go

Moreso that it might look bad to algorithms/underwriters. It did also effect my score in the sense that I believe having an almost maxed out card is a big score penalty (and probably looks bad to algorithms/underwriters too) and it definitely moved my overall utilization up a few tiers.

Once your carried balance reports as paid off, which you can verify on your 3B reports from annualcreditreport.com, feel free to apply for whatever it was you were considering.

You need to wait until it reports as $0 balance, which could take weeks depending on where you are in your current billing cycle. And some issuers are notoriously slow on reporting.

Follow up question that I think is relevant still:

Can I request multiple (soft pull) CLIs in a short time after my paid off balances are all reflected? I've been holding off for a while on requesting while I held a balance, but there's a few cards from different lenders I'd like an increase on. I just don't want to trigger a FR or some other kind of AA because it sounds annoying. Also wondering if its wise to avoid requesting a CLI on the card I had held the balance on (Discover) or if its fine.
