Capital One Preapproval Tool Check again results in hard credit inquiry!! (Solved see comments)

I thought this was a fluke when it happened in a few months ago, but tonight just now went through the preapproval tool to check for any offers (I have 3 Cap 1 cards now with the recent Discover transition) and go through the process and AGAIN after clicking submit to do the preapproval with no creidt check I get an alert they did a hard pull on my credit. My LifeLock popped an alert asking if I had asked Capital One to run a credit check.

Anyone else seeing this, or am I going crazy?

I have not personally experienced this with the Capital One pre qualify tool, especially when the wording specifically says there will be no impact to your credit score.

However this did happen a few months ago to me with Citi/Macy's. I used the prequalifer on Macys.com and it resulted in an Experian HP. My issue being that Experian will not allow you dispute inquiries online, even if the dispute is completely valid.

I'm wondering if this has something to do with LifeLock being very sensitive because I just went back and checked and I have a life lock alert from November 15, 2025 when the last time I checked the preapproval tool and then tonight but now that I look further I don't necessarily see the Capital One hard inquiries on my credit report reports

It was more than likely a soft pull. Most preappovals use a soft pull.

Sounds like they are notifying you they checked your credit, not that they necessarily did a hard pull. Have you had any other alerts that matched up to regular credit reviews from your existing lenders?

Download your report from annual credit report dot com. Those reports show hard and soft pulls, so you will be able to confirm with certainty that C1 only did a soft pull.

But honestly, I think you're fine. Looks like LifeLock alerts on any pull, hard or soft. Which is a probably a good thing. But does it also alarm on monthly account review soft pulls from your existing accounts? Or maybe it filters those out? That would be a lot of noise.

I'm pretty sure at this point the answer is LifeLock can check for soft pulls and alerts on them now. I think I overreacted to the alert, but no hard pulls are showing on CR's, just the LifeLock alert about an application. Must be new because it didn't do that before.

What is the language of the email / alert from Lifelock - can you share this ?

Are they saying it was a HP or just that it is an inquiry ?

myequifax can also trigger on soft pulls, it's good info to have, more services should show soft pulls or at least have a toggle to allow for that

That wording is confusing - I get that they're an identity protection business but classifying a SP as a "New Application" isn't accurate.

I guess they're trying to make sure it grabs your attention so that's happening for sure

My LifeLock alerts me even when I have a soft check. I am always getting an alert when c1 run a soft credit check on me.
