I’m looking for any Imprint-specific data points on this situation.

Earlier this month, I went through the preapproval process for the Rakuten American Express card (issued by First Electronic Bank / powered by Imprint). I received an offer for a $13,500 limit at 24.74% variable APR. I did not accept the offer as I wanted a lower interest rate, and it remains available until September 2.

Since then, my TransUnion FICO 8 increased and some additional card balances were paid down. Because Imprint will not let me generate a new Rakuten offer until the existing one expires, I tried a few other Imprint card prequalification/application flows just to see how Imprint was evaluating my current credit profile.

I used the same accurate information on each application.

I first tried the Eddie Bauer card, but it gave me a “technical difficulties” type message twice.

Shortly afterward, I tried Brooks Brothers. That application was denied with the reason:

“Your application is consistent with high credit risk and high fraud risk patterns.”

I then tried the H-E-B Visa, which was denied with:

“Your application is consistent with high-risk patterns.”

The H-E-B adverse-action notice also specifically says that the decision was based in whole or in part on information from an outside source other than a consumer reporting agency.

For clarification, all of these applications were legitimately submitted by me with accurate information. There was no identity issue, false income information, or attempt to obtain credit fraudulently. In hindsight, I’m wondering if submitting several Imprint applications/prequalifications close together triggered an application-velocity/fraud-prevention rule.

Interestingly, my original $13,500 Rakuten offer is still active and available to accept, so Imprint has not withdrawn that earlier offer.

I emailed Imprint requesting the specific adverse-action reasons and asking whether there is any fraud-risk restriction associated with my profile. It has now been about 6 days, and so far I have only received their generic automatic support response. A phone representative also could not provide the underlying reason.

Has anyone here experienced something similar with Imprint?

Specifically, I’m wondering:

Has anyone received the exact “high fraud risk patterns” or “high-risk patterns” denial from Imprint?

Can multiple Imprint applications within a short period trigger this?

If it is an application-velocity flag, how long did you wait before successfully prequalifying again?

Is this usually temporary, or have people seen longer-term Imprint restrictions?

Could these later denials affect an already-existing Rakuten offer that was generated beforehand?

Has anyone successfully reapplied with Imprint after waiting a few weeks?

How long did Imprint take to provide the detailed adverse-action reasons after you requested them?

My current plan is to submit no additional Imprint applications and let everything cool off. My Rakuten offer expires September 2, so if I don’t accept it, I should be able to submit a fresh Rakuten prequalification on September 3.

I’d especially appreciate any firsthand Imprint data points rather than general credit-card application rules.

Maybe all those apps dumped into the same database or databases that talk to each other and now algorithisms detect a behavior associated with bust out risks? Please let us know if the original approved app is successful, or otherwise.

I would assume that the existing preapproval may no longer be reliable. Once you accept the offer, they may perform a hard pull and run the full credit review process again to confirm that you are still eligible and that nothing material has changed.

Unfortunately, in your case, quite a bit may have changed. Whether through their internal systems or a third-party database, they may now be seeing multiple recent inquiries or application attempts. Even if they did not hard pull one of the major three bureaus, that does not necessarily mean those inquiries are invisible. They may appear through other consumer reporting agencies or internal risk tools.

The concern is that you applied or checked offers several times with the same creditor in a short period, likely hoping the activity would not be connected. Lenders can view that kind of application velocity as a risk signal. If I were reviewing it, I might wonder whether the applicant is seeking a lot of credit quickly because of financial stress or potential bust-out risk. Either way, it can look unfavorable.

That said, this may only be temporary. After 3, 6, or 12 months with no additional activity, the risk profile could look much better. Time tends to reduce the impact of these kinds of concerns.

My cards were approved pretty much close within the same timeframe - spread out several weeks/months apart, definitely not in days. Before you accept your Rakuten offer, remember to lock/freeze your Experian report to avoid the hard pull. That was how I was able to get all 5 of my cards with them.

My current plan is to wait until September 13th. By then, the Brooks Brothers and H-E-B applications from Aug. 12th will be over 30 days old, although the later Shell attempt will still be less than 30 days old.

Before doing anything, I plan to call Imprint and ask to speak with a supervisor to see where I stand and whether there is still any restriction or concern associated with the recent application activity. If the supervisor advises me to wait longer before trying Rakuten again, then that is what I will do. Otherwise, I would probably try one new Rakuten prequalification and leave it at that.

I also want to say I just disagree with how Imprint's pre-qualification procedure currently is. In my opinion, a better system would either allow someone to irrevocably decline an existing offer and re-prequalify whenever (in my case that would have been about a week or two later), or clearly warn applicants that attempting to prequalify for other Imprint-powered cards while an existing offer is still outstanding can potentially affect eligibility. As far as I can tell, Imprint currently does neither, so I plan to send them that suggestion.

I am not interested in opening any of the other Imprint cards. I was simply APR rate-shopping through soft-pull prequalification tools. My credit score had never been as high as it is now, and I wanted to see whether my improved profile could qualify for the lowest available APR. I normally pay my statement balances in full, but I still value having the lowest possible APR as an emergency fallback.

Had I realized that multiple prequalification attempts across different Imprint partner cards could be treated as combined application activity or trigger a risk/velocity concern, I certainly would not have done it. I would have waited until my score was optimized to the maximum or at least when it hit the 800s after all the balances being paid down to near-zero. That was something I simply did not understand about the way Imprint's platform works. So unfort. this has turned into a waiting game like it or not.
