U.S. Bank's Credit Card Finder

So I was shopping around for a credit card today. Decent credit score - around 770. According to Capital One I qualify for everything they offer, accoding to Chase I qualify for the Sapphire Preferred, Freedom, and Slate, but according to U.S. Bank I'm only fit for their Contour Prepaid Card. What the heck?

Anybody got an idea why that would be?

Its junk... I do bank with them, so I get a pre "Offers" other then the countour and I have way lower scores then yours... Assume it can see my banking account. Your results are fairly typical though.

Also I wouldn't put much wait on US Banks Pre-Qual site... If your profile is strong and not a tons of new accounts/inquires then just apply for whatever you might want.

Depends which bureau they are softing if they've even targeted you at all.

Never seen a soft from US Bank on my CR's.. I get mailers and get options on their site though.. Assume either it is my banking "reationship"" or the CRA's deal with US Bank why I get crud from them. No desire for any of their cards.

The last time I applied for anything from them they kicked the app back, didn't pull anything and when I called they told me I was not in their service area.

I'd be denied for a Contour even.

Same day, I received instant approval for 20K on a Chase Card.

But that USBank secured card sure looks inviting....

Do you have any other banking relationship with US Bank? I have a mortgage and they called me in 2009 and 2012 to push credit cards on me. Was no issue for me to get the Travel (non)Rewards card last summer, which I just closed. Going in to the actual branch is suggested also, it works well with US Bank.

Or, you could get the secured card and work that for a year then go for a real US Bank card. That's the exact strategy I am resorting to with PenFed, get a secured for now while I can't get a real card from them

I'm surprised you were approved for the PenFed card. Was it because of your high utilization?

Not approved, yes, high utilization, but more than that, large amounts outstanding. Doesn't seem to bother US Bank, Diners, or Chase. PenFed sez no.

So I used the HP and a savings account deposit to get the secured card.

Yeah I mistyped. Meant not approved. The secured card is a good route. They just happen to be a very conservative CU. I was surprised I got approved as I was sure I was going to get declined due to their 'pyramiding debt' reason they give all the time

Thats actually rude to say. Not all of us are in the great situation you may be in? for some reason or another. I had that "secured inviting looking USbank card" and it did help me in my rebuilding process. Just my 2cents.

Thats actually rude to say. Not all of us are in the great situation you may be in? for some reason or another. I had that "secured inviting looking USbank card" and it did help me in my rebuilding process. Just my 2cents.

I'm chuckling at the OP's joke, and at the same time I fully appreciate the importance of secured cards to rebuilders.

A good sense of humor is important in any situation where you don't have control of the outcome, like when applying for credit.

As a data point, I was only getting the Contour prepaid card offer.

I opened a checking account, and in a couple of months I now see offers. Nothing is prequalified yet, but I get recommendations I never saw before. I also received a solicitation to apply for one of their basic cards. I'm letting that offer slide in the hopes that something better comes along.

My intent was to deep-six some crappy old cards I was hanging onto just to keep my AAOA up for my recent mortgage transaction. Among them, a Capital One which had no rewards, ridiculous interest and quite possibly the worst customer service on the planet. Got a BOA Cash Rewards card back in November and did away with the Cap One piece of trash. (15k, instant). Excellent service, and great bennies.

Figured I'd get one more Visa/MC to round out things out in my wallet. (Discover IT, Amex Blue Cash Preferred, BOA Cash Rewards) so I used everybody's card finders to look for the best deal. Settled on Chase, and was approved instantly for 21k.

"Secured Card?" Suck it, US Bank.
