I burned Chase..........and I didn't even know it!

So.....just a heads up for anyone with military background...I applied for a Chase Slate card today and had to call and try to recon. I was grilled for about 10 minutes and then she proceeded to ask me about my MWR card. The MWR card is basicly the credit card you get in the military that can be used at the exchange on the base. This card was from years ago and I explained to her that after being discharged, I let it slip through the cracks, paid it off after I got a letter in the mail, then received a refund back for overpayment. (I never saw the card on my CR's because back then I didn't check CR's but she said its still in their system). Long story short, I got declined and just found out that the card is issued by Chase Bank. If you keep getting denials from Chase and you have a military background it's just something to look into.

Good advice. My X also denied a Chase Freedom and found out through a recon that she had a CO from an old Oreck store card. The card was never reported on any of her CR's and it no longer exists today. Chase still had it in their system.

OP, sorry to hear about the outcome. Although this may be a blemish in their internal records, it appears you paid it and is no longer in your CRs, so that's a plus.

How long ago did this occur or when did you pay it off? I would imagine > 7 years ago? If so, I would think there's a possibility that you can have this application re-reviewed

How's the rest of your profile? Was this the only reason cited for the declined application? There have been instances in which Chase is able to overturn the decision for others who have had a similar situation. Hopefully others can chime in on this.

Yes FinStar, it was more than 7 years ago. Also, I started rebuilding a few months ago and she asked about the balance on my NFCU card because I used it to pay off some medical bills. The MWR card wasn't the only reason but it was quite a shock when she brought it up. I just wanted to inform others who may have great reports and are a bit confused as to why they can't be approved with Chase. As the other poster said above, I guess they just have accounts in the system that are extremely old.

There have been so many bank failures and consolidations over the years it's sometimes very difficult to decipher who owned who, who tookover who, and who might have our old credit mistakes on file. When I reconned to get my Freedom, the analyst brought up an old Providian card that I had in 1999. WAMU bought Providian and then when WAMU went TU, Chase tookover the portfolio.

Sorry to hear OP. myjourney I got you beat. In 2004, Chase asked me about my BK from 1993 when I had to recon to get that $500 Freedom. They never forget right along with Citi. I'm with you about 20+ years ago. I had just got out the military myself and was unemployed and therefore my pristine military credit went belly up.

I too burned Chase in my BK with my Circuit City credit card... I think I only owed like 313.00 back in the day....Even though it no longer shows on my CR they have me flagged in there system

Chase is one of the banks IIB on my reports that I'd eventually like to get back in with. Does anyone know if they'll forgive if you pay off the old account? I have a checking account with them, I just refinanced my mortgage with Chase (already with Chase, lower APR now), and I've had an auto loan (paid off, no lates) with them. I'm curious if they take any of this into consideration?

Last year when I got approved finally with chase after my 1993 BK, I spoke with someone at chase who said they would remove my 1993 BK from their records. Don't know how they did it but I think it was done based on my success with chase. Prior to that I was always asked about my 1993 BK.

Paying (in full) seems to help. Although others do seem to get back in without re-paying but even if you pay it back, you might be one of those that has to recon every time. But if you really want another Chase card, paying would probably be the fastest way to get back in.
