I got an email that I was "pre-selected" to apply for the USAA Classic Platinum MasterCard. I was a USAA member a very long time ago, but didn't leave on the best of terms. I was under the impression you had to be a member to hold one of their cards. The email has my hackles raised a bit, although I did see recently USAA did a SP on my credit report. The email subject line was: Start improving your credit - here's how.

Is this a legit offer for rebuilding credit/credit card?

Yeah, I can't think they're going to offer anything stellar if it's got rebuilding plastered all over the offer. It might actually be time to trim some down, or at least sock drawer them until I have a more solid credit profile.

If the email is 'legit', it will have a gray box in the upper right hand corner and in blue text it will say "USAA Security Zone", your full name (in my case, no initial or suffix), and the last four digits of your USAA member number.

If these are missing, it's fake. If these are present, (and the data is correct) it should be legit.

If you determine that the message is legitimate, it might be worth a phone call to reset your ID. If you were still on their "list" I seriously doubt you would have received the email at all... being a mostly online bank, they generally don't mess up something like that.

I just got approved for this exact card from them a week or two ago. No pre approved offers from them or anything. I've been a full member (I'm active duty) with them for a little over 3 years now, had a secured card with them for about the same length. I just recently closed it, apped for that classic card, and instantly approved for 2k limit. The apr is high, my credit is fair, but I don't necessarily think this is a rebuilding card with them. That's what they have their secured cards for. Plus it's my understanding that this classic gets periodically reviewed to be automatically upgraded to a higher tiered card with them. That's all this classic is, is just a lower tiered card they offer.

It's "higher" than their secured accounts, but yet not as fancy as their world cards.

Yeah, that's a good idea with an Amex. Kind of wish I would've did that actually. I'd really like to have an Amex to have a good selection of cards in my wallet. I just recently was denied for the Amex everyday card.
Had a used my brain, I'd had apped for the usaa Amex, not Mc.

I do agree with the checking. I use usaa for checking as well as my credit card. High apr on it or not, Ive always enjoyed usaa. That alone is enough to justify to myself in keeping alot of my accounts with them.

That secured card I had with them set me up for success. Now hopefully this new classic card will launch me in to their "world" cards lineup eventually.
