Congrats on your approvals! Maybe you should have applied for Discover at the beginning of your spree instead of last.

I'm stunned. After huge approvals and score boosts into low 700 land, Discover made me get a co applicant for approval and then on top of that gave us a $500 CL !!! My partners scores are 770s and our combined income is almost $175k!!! Absolutely ridiculous. They seek to think they are elite among the Elite!

Amex ED: $4000
Amex Delta: $7,700
BBVA Nba: $5,000
USAA: $2,000

All within a week. Discover was my last in spree and I was stunned. They cite reason as 30'day lates from 5 years ago and INQs !!! Five years! I told her that a late or two from five years ago no way accurately reflects my present situation (I was very ill), and is unjust to utilize at this time. No dice. $500 with a consigner.

I'm angry and thinking of telling them to shove it and canceling. Why Discover has this holier than thou attitude I will never know. Their card is pretty, but much like other things in life, pretty doesn't always equate to something worth while! Perhaps I sound entitled myself, but I'm sorry -- scores as mine, high income AND a cosigner with $500 CL is just insulting. Sleeping on it then possibly closing in AM. waiting on a call from a Manager too, but that'll do no good I hear.
I'm
Not really "rebuilding" anymore. Rebuilders typically don't get CLs of $7700, and a total of over $15k in a few days. . When I hear rebuilding I think high 500s, low 600s scores. I'm way past that. I suppose in a sense I'm still in that bracket but barely.

You have to admit that it is completely off compared to other approvals -- especially with other prime lenders. Amex especially ! Just don't get it.

I might have agreed with the above except a.) You already have other cards with decent limits, $500 is going to be a pain trying to utilize 5% categories or Discover Deals with and b.) Maybe giving it a couple years and then reapplying would net you better results with Discover later.

But on the other hand you dont have much diversity at the moment from what I can see and the CL might grow over the next couple years. Maybe...its really up to you but if you keep it then thats completely understandable. Discover has been a headache for me lately so my opinion is a bit biased right now, keep that in mind.

Discover gave me my 1st card for $500 with all aus on my file last December via a prescreened letter but as you can see in my siggy 11 months later my limit sits at $1300. And then when I hit the cli button it wants permission to pull my credit. No way.

I wish someone who works in their credit analyst department could come on here incognito and explain to us their credit granting criteria.

They should have at least given you $1500.

I gotta say, I gotta side with the OP on this. A $500 joint card really is an insult. More than any other lender, Discover seems a bit crazy in how they decide approvals sometimes and has a weird habit of citing really old baddies as a justification for why they are stiffing you. Sometimes, Discover seems more likely to approve someone with no credit whatsoever than someone with a 4-5 year old baddie that has been managing credit responsibly since.

For the record, OP, I understand what you're going through. My Discover is also a joint card and they only initially approved me for a $1000 limit. Then after 6 months of PIF on their card (and all my cards, in fact), I got a generous $500 customer-initiated CLI. Lol.

Welcome to the crapshoot called Discover. They are an odd one to figure out. They are treated like something special but yet they are generous to thin files and fresh BK's and treat high scores and thick files with somewhat disdain, the opposite of what you'd expect a prime card to do. Since Discover is in bizzaro world maybe the best thing to do is SD it and they'll CLI to $5k. Either way your frustration is understood and shared, good luck whatever you decide to do.

Congrats on your approvals! Maybe you should have applied for Discover at the beginning of your spree instead of last.

Beautifulblaquepearl has a point but what's done is done. Bottom line, if you're unhappy with the limit or "feel insulted" then close it and move on.

While it's understandable that you're disappointed, lack of patience or strategy sometimes can have unexpected results. Discover is just one of those quirky lenders that has successful outcomes for somebbut not for everyone.

@Anonymous wrote:

Many complaints on this forum for the exact same reason with this company.

I'll
Be happy with my Amex's and BBVA :-). Got an awesome
BT Offer with BBVA and scooped it up !

Let me tell you a recent experience I had. I applied for the Synchrony Walmart Mastercard. Was approved but got a disappointingly low credit limit Then I reconned and they stuck with the limit. I was PO'd so I cancelled the card within a couple of days after receiving it.

Then I started reading a lot of posts here about people with that card getting all kinds of credit limit increases. And I also realized that I'd already taken a hard pull to get the card, and was also being credited with a new account even though it was now cancelled, and had nothing to show for it. At least if I'd kept the card, I'd have the card, I'd have the itty bitty credit limit, and over time the limit would grow.

So I resolved that the next time I apply for a card and am granted it, I'm keeping it, whether I'm disappointed in the credit limit or not.

I was approved for a Discover IT (not original terms) for $1000. I've had it six months and the limit is up to $3400. I think I had a 672 when I applied, but I had a lot of inq's and two lates on capital one cards from 2013 and 2011. Definitely a strange approval process.
