Try not to take it so hard, it is truly nothing personal and you just misunderstood "retired", as many others have. Not a big deal.

Also, you are not the only one who doesn't agree with NFCU's policy of who can get in and who can't. But NFCU is not a perk for being in the military (as so many see it), but a standalone business which can decide who they will do business with.

You can build/rebuild your credit without them certainly and there are MANY other great credit unions.

However, if I were you I would absolutely ask your aunt to join, your mom to join and then join yourself. It will be worth it and you are not bothering them about it so much as enlightening them about NFCU where they will also reap the benefits of membership. And really, your aunt/uncle may already be members.

Good luck!

I'm not particularly fond of starting threads, and my patience is decent, but I am starting to become concerned. I finally had the information I needed last Friday evening(yeah I know, setting myself up for a wait there) to apply for NFCU membership. I checked my inbox today to confirm that they emailed me a confirmation of receipt, and they did, right after I applied.

I could understand if they had questions or needed a piece of information, but I have not heard a single word. I realize they may be busy with advertisements during NFL games(although I am not sure how eager drunken football fans are to run to their computers in the heat of action and app, lol), but is a week without a word for a simple membership application(no product or anything) typical? At some point should I try to recontact them, and if so, how so?

I'd appreciate any wait time experiences from anyone, especially the more recent ones. Thank you for helping me stay strong at a point I view as possibly the biggest crossroads in this portion of my journey. Hopefully soon I will be asking about products and whether proof of income is typically necessary, and if maybe I should let my accepted app age to hopefully avoid the former....but for now, it seeems like I am tripping over something which should be so incredibly simple. Father is retired USAF, if that matters. Thanks

You definitely need to contact them. It doesnt take a week to process a membersip application.. As Scupra says they are very friendly and eager to get members. If you have a branch near you stop in and find out what is going on. If not, try the phone. It usually doesnt' bite.

It took me nearly a month to become a member. I sent docs in at least 6 times. Finally got everything approved and apped for a CC and CLOC. Approved on both but card locked by fraud dept for no good reason. AU's card worked just fine. Lol

Good luck and hope your luck is better than mine. The debacle left such a bitter taste. I've charged a $1.000 on the card. I let my AU use it as much as she likes. So at least it shows use. Even if its not me using it.

No honorable discharge or anything.

She then asked about my Grandpa. Well, Grandpa was in the US Army....and put his life on the line to serve in the Pacific during World War 2. But after suriving and returning to his country, he took a civilian job. That kind of service apparently wasn't enough. Maybe if he had been killed?

I mentioned my uncle who was a Master Sargent in the US Army... I think he got his 20 years in, including service in Nam. But he's my mother's brother in law, so my aunt, then my mom, then myself would have to become members in that order. I am not asking that of them.

I forgot to mention to the CSR my mother's brother was actually in the branch it's named after, the NAVY, but not for 20+ years, so I'm guessing that wouldn't have mattered either.

My brother was a civilian contractor at a naval air base about a year ago, but Im about certain he wasn't even aware of or care about a CU, so no dice there either. I feel like the "day late, dollar short" now. I also feel like i mistakenly misrepresented my eligibility to you folks, which is something I am most certainly not proud of. I didn't understand the special requirements to earn the term retired, and in all of my reading both on here, on other less friendly sites, and on the NFCU site itself.

Yes, i am a bit emotional right now, and am upset I misunderstood something that the CSR made sound rudimentary. I feel like falling off the wagon and returning to the bottle. It sucks thinking you have something in the bag, (2 of my scores are 670 or higher now) and that you about to make a quantum leap into new territory, and then basically be made to feel foolish for what words mean to you.

Of all the service I listed(I myself was recruited hard, one guy claiming my ASVAB was the highest they had ever seen, whether he was being honest or not), apparently it cant be combined to be enough. Reminds me of the CCR song, "Fortunate Son", where the answer to how much you are supposed to give is "more, more, more!". Feel free to laugh at my ignorance of terminology and the requirements of service.....and <STRIKE>BLEEP NFCU </STRIKE> "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do".

EDIT: a courtesy email within a full week's time would have been nice. For a military analogy, it would have been the equivalent of the "reacharound" the drill Sargent mentioned Private Pyle would not give, while doing what NFCU just did with my head. The connection to the military I read from others on here and other lower quality boards has made a joke and a mockery of this, when I consider my family's service.

Edit 2:I'm calmer now, I just required some time to digest what happened. I'd finish my NASA FCU app out of spite to NFCU, however I've read they(like most CUs) require proof of income, which I do not wish to provide. I heard that for some people, NFCU was an exception to this and figured I'd find out. I'm just thinking about those filthy blackwater ****s building their credit on the backs of whomever, and decent folks like myself being told to take a hike, and it riles me. I hope this resonates with at least one other soul out there. If so, I feel that my lamentations have served humanity.

@stellar wrote:

Good luck!

+1 Exactly this ^^^

I'm eligible through my USAF brother, but he's getting out next spring, two years shy of retirement. Because of this (and what I'd read here on myFICO) I knew to have him join before he gets out, or else he, his children, and the rest of the family would be forever locked out of NFCU (at least using him as a sponsor).

I'm genuinely sorry for your misunderstanding, and I also 'feel' your aggrevation at how easy it is for some folks to become members when they have less than solid connections to their sponsor (roommates?... I mean really, if that's not a stretch, nothing is) when others who have very solid connections are turned away on what seems like a technicality.

Like Stellar suggested, I would check with your relatives. While you would benefit from them joining, it's not as if they would get 'nothing' out if it themselves. I've been with NFCU only for a month, but from what I've seen so far, they are worth the extra leg-work. And who knows... your relatives might even end up thanking you later on!

Edit: Typo

Thank you both for your replies. I tend to be sensitive and take things harder than average at first, but sometimes get over them more quickly as well. I can se how easily my post could be poked fun at, and I appreciate you gentlemen for seeing what I was feeling.

I thought about it before reading this, and a good while ago sent some texts to my mother, whom I also was trying to get to join and take advantage of the zero percent BT for a year!!! I hadn't exactly sold her, and she had trouble filling out the application for membership(we live in different states). Anyhow, I suppose I saved her from having to see the bad news.

I can see if she can sell her sister on getting a membership. There's nothing to lose, right? In the wording of my text, I did mention helping me. And now after reading this, I dont feel as selfish for imagining that. I can help my brother, who is responsible, but hasn't built credit. It all starts with the aunt and if my Mom can build the desire to CLOSE HER, like on Glengarry, Glen Ross(one of my favorite films...solid!!).

Maybe I just don't have a lot of faith in people to put forth effort when it wasn't their own idea? It could be the result of pavlovian conditioning based on previous attempts. But this is a new attempt, so maybe this chain that sounded long and odd at first, can be done....and maybe in a decent amount of time. Maybe I can get my mom to sell it as a Christmas present.... Of course, I have to make sure my Uncle qualifies. I think he did 20+ years, he loved the life...wanted to go back during Iraq1. Good man, I think he has minor PTSD from Nam though, but hides it extremely well. I hope I dont cause the Aunt or Uncle to go into debt if they see some sweet looking deals. lol

Thanks again folks, have already rtexted the heck out of mother and brother. You folks have bolstered my believe that I can close their ***es, to borrow a phrase from Glengarry, Glen Ross...I so love that film....reminds me of the hard, lonely times during my period of sales look at this EPIC cast: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104348/

Nobody's going to laugh at all... we've all been in similar situations, and sometimes things just don't work out the way you plan. When that happens, you fall-back, and make a new plan... which is what you're doing!

I actually can relate to your situation with your relatives... I was "technically" eligible to join without my USAF brother joining first, but I've read the 'tales of woe' on here from folks who have dealt with the NFCU security folks, and I wanted to do everything possible I could to minimize my chances of having to deal with them. I figured the best way to do that was to join using my brother as a direct sponsor, i.e. using his member number (NFCU calls it an "Access Number") rather than simply checking a box that I was a sibling to someone in active duty.

Well, my brother is actually going through a divorce, and I was even concerned there would be an issue with him even becoming a member since they do a credit check. (For the record, that wasn't a problem). But even after that, I was still asking him to do something that (most likely) wouldn't benefit him directly, at least not right now. In my own case, it helped that he was already somewhat familiar with them from conversations with his coworkers, and there are brick-and-mortar branches near his base, so it's not as if I had to 'start from scratch' explaining what they were about.

After my brother got his access number (membership), he talked to them over a period of a couple of weeks about refinancing a vehicle, but ultimately they weren't able to help him due to credit circumstances created by the pending divorce. He told me that the rate he would have been approved for (had everything gone well) was quite a bit better than he presently has, so there's that. So while for him the experience wasn't exactly 'stellar', he still came away feeling he had accomplished something... they encouraged him to come back once things get better, and he talked to me like he was planning to do so. Like you, he was very pleased with the customer service he received, and even mention that if he had not been planning on getting out of the air force next spring he would likely move his primary checking to them (for active duty, NFCU beats everybody, but if not active then USAA is the best). The same day he gave me his 'access number' so I could use him as a sponsor, I became a member and was immediately approved for their low-APR 'Platinum' MasterCard with a SL of $15.3k/10.99%. I have less than perfect credit (and he knows this), so I simply mentioned "yeah, I got a card..." but I didn't go into how 'awesome' it was for obvious reasons (awkward).

TL;DR version... I would 'sell' your aunt (if not already a member) on what NFCU can do for her, and mention that once she's a member that your mom will be eligible as well, and how useful it could be for your mom. I would also stress that it's not a 'big deal' to be a member... it's not as if she has to get a credit card or anything - all she has to do is get a savings account with as little as $5 (I offered to pay this for my brother... he laughed and told me not to worry about it... LOL). Another 'angle' to use is your uncle - many folks (especially if older) take great pride in their service, and are eager to take advantage of any benefits (even perceived) that are associated with it, so being a member of NFCU could even be considered 'cool' by him. (My own grandfather was very eager to take advantage of a 'new' insurance policy offered by the US Steelworkers union, even though it was nothing to write home about... "but it's from the union!")

Finally, good luck, and don't give up yet. Even if none of the above works out, there's always a possibility they could change the membership requirements in the future (heck, USAA has several times, in each direction!)

After being inspiried by you guys and writing my mom a couple of emails, the 2nd of which included the very encouraging and informational post of UncleB, I feel like I at least have a chance. Theyre both(mom and aunt) a couple of times zones away(from me)....with maybe 90 minutes to a 2 hour drive between them. I think they're back to having a decent relationship....(ha, our family has had minor drama on occasion).

Myself, i dont have a close relationship with my aunt, so I am hoping to do my selling to my mother, to sell her sistser. I want to be a CLOSER, for anyone who has watched Glengarry, Glen Ross(yes, it's a VERY memorable movie with an all star cast!).

Maybe I can update you more later today. I'd love to revive this thread when I get my membership....or should I start a new one? Either way, I'd imagine it could be fairly soon, before the end of he year, if things happen properly!!! Wouldn't I love to hear that my uncle or aunt were already members!

Feel free to laugh at my ignorance of terminology and the requirements of service.....and BLEEP NFCU.

Just a fyi, NASA may not require proof of income. They never requested mine. Penfed is another great option if you're not already a member. You'll qualify without a hitch with Penfed. Good luck with your quest.

For anyone interested in an update: Although I have ignored my uncle's emails about Abmbit Energy and LinkedIn for years, I had the gall to write him an EPIC email that took about an hour to compose, and touched on many things, including the fact that it's a grave sin for 2 of the 3 monotheistic religions to use interest(historial footnote, no need for trigger finger, please?), while the other has gained vast power in every land throughout it's use in history. Much of history, including wars, can be understood through banking. I also mentioned the one time Jesus used violence was against bankers. One need NOT be religious(nor is this message, mods) to understand the very simple teaching of the immorality of usury. This was inspired by how much the 1 year, zero interest, balance transfer would help my mother.

So, EPIC email created and sent explaining that he need not even applpy(It must feel odd to him that my AUNT is the actual "mark", after he was the guy who served for so many years and put his life on the line in Nam...I wouldnt fault him for seeing it as a slap in the face, and hope my wording distracted him from that fact).

If 3-4 memberships result from my efforts, I wouldn't be opposed to NFCU giving me a commission, not unlike the reacharound mentioned in Full Metal Jacket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2vkiLHiTcY
