NFCU Referral Promo... Your Experience?

Hello all!

I was wondering if anybody had any notable data points or other feedback related to referring a family member for new NFCU membership, specifically with the $50 promo (either the current one or from a few months back). I'm specifically interested if the bonus applies to a spouse and children.

Any feedback welcome... I'm especially curious to see how the bonus(s) played out!

Hopefully I can add DP's to this next week, I will be making two referrals Monday. I tried to send the email referral tonight but it didn't send. I got a postal failure message. Will try again tomorrow, but will have DD and sis call on Monday, and speak with the nice representative that called to welcome me.

When I joined they had the $100 bonus for each person (Current and new member received $100)

My parents joined making me eligible. $100 for each of us.

I had my wife join and we each received $100.

Not sure how it is working on the new promotion.

Im scared to refer. I don't want my account getting frozen (just being paranoid). I had my sisters apply through navy league route , i wouldnt have mind the $100 though =/

This is encouraging... even though the promo amount has changed to $50 I would expect (?) it to work the same way you're describing.

I know how you feel. I joined using my USAF brother as my sponsor, and I'm considering having our brother that is interested in joining now use him as well (instead of me) to minimize the chance of any issues.

On the other hand, my own membership is completely legit and if they were to 'verify' anything it would come out OK in the end... I'm just not sure I want to deal with the possible hassle.

I will add that before I joined I had my USAF brother join first, so I hope that since my sponsor was already a member (I entered his access number when I joined and was instantly approved) that will keep any problems from coming up later on.

I didn't receive a referral promotion e-mail, but I had my husband join last month prior to any promo e-mails.

I don't think I would have used the referral promo anyway, since I've personally experienced how jumpy NFCU can be when you're a new member and would not want any affiliation with what I went through (having my accounts locked and my funds tied up for weeks) to affect a family member. Best and easiest in my opinion to just have us join separately.

I called Caroline to let her know they wanted to join and she called them herself, and processed everything on the phone, said they will receive something in the mail to sign and welcome packet in the mail in the next 7-10 days (possibly a little longer) due to overwhelming membership apps. this month. They have access numbers already, savings accounts only.

That's my big question as well.

I'm thinking that they should since they are new members regardless of their age, but the only way to know for certain will be for somebody to either check directly with NFCU, or simply try and see what happens.

Yes children works. I did my 17 year old son (of course I had to be on the account 14-17) but they didn't pull my credit again. Enjoy!!! I have done 3 people so far!!!

I called with them on 3 way... However, for my sister i just gave her my access code.

Wondering if you can do it with smaller children, they told me when I joined I could add my children no matter what age so that when they are older they will have already been members for a long time .

I joined on the promo on 9/1 online. It was very easy and quick. I still don't have my $50 for signing up but I do have the debit card though. I also signed up my husband (Army veteran), daughter (25), and son (26) under me. The only one they wanted more info on was my husband. We had to email them a copy of his ID and a utility bill in his name. They did say they were swamped this month with the promo.

I applied for the Cash Rewards card I believe around 9/3 and was instantly approved for $1,600. I don't have that card yet either but it is showing on my account. My scores are definitely not all that but hovoring in the 600 range.

It makes me a little 'queasy' that NFCU would make it difficult for a direct relative of an existing member (in this case, your husband)... those applications should get a 'rubber stamp' in my opinion since there's no question that the person qualifies. When I got my own membership last fall, I used my brother's access number and selected 'sibling', and I got an immediate response and was able to app for a credit card only minutes later.

I know there are many people on here who are willing to jump through hoops for NFCU membership (I would be as well) but honestly my relatives won't be as enthusiastic as the average myFICO member - to them it's just another CU, and all they know about it is that I'm telling them how 'wonderful' it can be. While $50 is nice, if I have to hand-hold relatives and help them come up with documents I have to question if it's worth the hassle (to me).

This is another example of the 'action item' over on Humuhumu's thread that NFCU really needs to work out their membership process to make it more seamless, especially for people with clear paths to membership.

The part that bothered me is that I was just signing up with a friend and have absolutely no military background at all and yet he was in the Army and served in Vietnam and had to go through that. He should have been pushed on through IMO.
